Lady Evie Chesterfield is a darling of the ton who refuses to become engaged. She's been desperately in love with her brother's friend, Richard Maitland, Marquess of Westfall, since forever. But the dark, dangerous marquess only sees her as a friend and refuses to marry any woman. When circumstances change and Evie has no choice but to take a husband, she decides to convince London's most notorious gentleman to marry her by seducing the scoundrel.

Richard Maitland decided long ago that he wanted nothing to do with love. So when the gorgeous, off-limits Evie asks him for lessons in seduction, Richard knows he's playing with fire. Despite Richard's determination to protect her from his dastardly reputation, he is tested at every turn by his need for the infuriating, but enticing, Lady Evie. Before too long he is faced with making an impossible choice…

I absolutely loved Evie and Richard’s story. It has been building up in the last 2 books. Richard has been in love with Evie since he first met her the day before her 16th Birthday. He knew he would ruin her if she came near him but he couldn’t help himself. Over the years she was his sun and he would seek her out to right his world.
Evie has been infatuated with Richard from the first time she met him and with his friendship it has grown to love. What can she do to show him that they are perfect for each other.
When Richard realizes he had a child that lived and it was given to a baby farm, he would move Heaven and earth to find her. When he did find her he not only took his child away from the “Hell” she was living in but the other children that were with her.
He loves Evie but doesn’t know if he could trust her to care for his daughter and the other children.
So much turmoil but when he almost loses Evie to a fever he realizes what he wants.
A beautifully written story with a wonderful ending.

I love this series, and I loved this couple - I was looking forward to their story, and while I definitely enjoyed it, there was more angst than I felt necessary. There are some allusions and ties to book 1 in this series, so I would recommend reading Accidentally Compromising the Duke before reading this one for some more background on this couple and their history.

Lady Evie Chesterfield has been in love with Richard Maitland since he happened upon her casting up her accounts at a party she was not supposed to be attending as she was not yet of age. Not only did Richard, her older brother's good friend and the second son of a duke, keep her confidences, he also gave her advice on how to avoid being married off to an older gentleman that her mother has been pushing on her to secure at her coming out party happening the very next day on her 16th birthday.

Evie has no desire to be married - she is much too young and she believes in love and wants to find it before she makes that kind of commitment. But over the next few years, Evie and Richard become close friends, and they seek each other's consult when they have no one else they can talk to about things. Before long, Evie realizes she has fallen head over heels in love with Richard, but she knows he has vowed to never marry after his former fiancee broke his heart years earlier. When her mother schemes to marry Evie off to the Duke of Wolverton (known to all in the ton as the "Mad Duke") at a house party that they are hosting, Evie betrays her best friend Adeline by setting her up to be compromised by the duke so that he will have to call off their betrothal plans to wed Adeline instead (this plot unfolds in book 1 mentioned above). Fortunately for all, the duke and Adeline fall in love, but when Evie's mother tells her that their family is falling into financial ruin, Evie know she is running out of time before she is forced to wed.

Richard Maitland became enchanted with Evie from the moment he met her, and over the years, they have become friends and confidants. In fact, Evie is who he turns to when he returns from war and grieves the loss of his older brother. And Evie is also who Richard turns to when he learns he is a father, and the mother of his child (the fiancee that jilted him years earlier) abandoned their daughter Emily at a baby farm. Evie supports his decision to find Emily and claim her regardless of her birth status, even when the rest of the ton, including his own family, turn against him.

Because of the situation he found Emily in and the circumstances of the many other children he has since rescued, Richard is equally determined to use his seat at the table as the Marquess of Westfall (set to inherit the dukedom as a result of his brother's untimely death) to take on the establishment that only allows the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. His interactions with his "peers" and their disdain for people who are not responsible for their impoverished conditions has soured Richard towards the ton to the extent that he no longer socializes with them nor cares what they think of him. Though he has always had strong feelings for Evie, she has been the darling of the ton since her coming out, and he knows that his standing in society would drag her down. He also isn't certain that she could ever accept his daughter and openly embrace her in society. But when Evie tells him that she must marry, will Richard truly be able to let her go? Can Richard give Evie a chance to accept him for who he is and his daughter as her own? And when they are caught in a compromising position, will Richard step up to the plate?

    What I liked:
--- In the earlier books of the series, I always liked Richard, but Evie was so selfish in the first book setting her best friend up like that... I didn't like her much at all; this book gave me much more insight and demonstrated growth, so I found both main characters likeable in this story
--- The characters from book 1 were in this one quite a bit which was nice bc I enjoyed their story
--- The story dealt with the disparity between the rich and the poor in this time period, which is often not a focus in HRs, so it was nice to see a champion for this cause
--- Once we GOT to the steamy goodness, it was delish

What I didn't like as much:
--- FFS Richard - get over yourself! While I liked that he was passionate about his daughter and making positive changes in the world, he was WAY TOO STUBBORN about things with Evie, and he made too many assumptions - made me crazy and I felt like it went too far beyond what would be considered reasonable (thus, my too much angst rating); and I HATE when ****SPOILER there is a big falling out and the H decides to make it up to the h but doesn't talk to her for a couple of weeks so she thinks it's over and is totally miserable all that time - you don't leave someone you truly loving hanging in the wind like that - pet peeve of mine in romance novels when the author does that ****END SPOILER
--- SLOW BURN - I really could have used a little more much sooner bc there was already a relationship there between the two, so there wasn't much need for all of the lead up time

Overall, I enjoyed this story of friends-to-lovers. There was a lot of chemistry between the main characters, some steamy goodness, and (of course!) a satisfying HEA!

    Plot --- 4/5
    Main Characters --- 4/5
    Supporting Cast --- 4/5
    Steam Level* --- 3/5
Violence --- some descriptions of children being abused but not graphic; recounting of a fight - also not graphic
    Language --- not egregious
    POV --- 3rd

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

Since reading the first Wedded by Scandal book, Accidentally Compromising the Duke, I have been on tenterhooks for Evie and Westfall’s story. Stacy Reid did not disappoint. How to Marry a Marquess has it all: bright dialogue, meltingly sensual scenes, and a romance you can root for. I adored it.

What I liked best about Evie and Westfall’s relationship is that it is six years in the making. Ms. Reid takes readers on a journey that starts with a less than glamorous (but quite funny) initial meeting. Even though they’re immediately attracted to one another, the two of them are friends for years before the main story develops. I loved the chemistry Evie and Westfall had both as friends and lovers. The sexual tension was utterly delicious and their dialogue brightened up the page and made How to Marry a Marquess practically speed by.

While it’s clear to everyone that Evie and Westfall would make a great match, things aren’t so easy for them. Westfall’s life took a turn when he found and rescued his illegitimate daughter, Emily. Emily changed Westfall’s outlook on life and his patience for the hypocrisy of high society is limited. The fact that he loves his daughter and the other children he adopted made me melt, but his actions have made him a pariah in society. While he doesn’t care that his name has been dragged through the mud, he’s so protective of Evie that he won’t give them a chance because he doesn’t believe that the darling of society could be an outcast. Westfall’s passion for social reform made me love him, but I did want to shake him a time or two because he makes assumptions about Evie and what she does or does not think. Neither he nor Evie are perfect and that means that – even though they both have hearts of gold – they don’t always say or do the right thing. But even when they screw up, they mean well and Ms. Reid shows us why each acts the way they do. And all the ups and downs are totally worth it because their happily ever after is wonderfully romantic.

How to Marry a Marquess is the third Wedded by Scandal book, but it can easily be read as a standalone. As happened Accidentally Compromising the Duke, I made the mistake of trying to read this story on my lunch break, which was a terrible plan. Ms. Reid’s writing is so entertaining that if you have to put the story down, you’re counting the hours until you can get back to it. I love a good friends-to-lovers story and Evie and Westfall’s is simply fantastic.

Wonderful book and characters. Ms. Reid never Falters in her writing. She gives the best there is , I only wish she would have extended epilogue. Avid has loved Richard from the time she was turning sixteen and Richard has always been there for her and kept his feelings separate trying to spare her from society as she has always been a diamond in society. Avid will not waiver and has turned down many suitors hoping that the day will cone that Richard sees her as his friend, lover and some day as his wife. seems do come true and they get their HEA and so much more. Would highly recommend to this author and series. Happy reading.😊

    5.0 out of 5 stars 🖤 Evie & Richard 🖤

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/6.
    🌶️🌶️.5/5.

I must say, I didn’t think this book would be a 5 star. Halfway through I was certain I would rate it around a 4 or maybe less but then Richard turn it around for me. Him literally being on his knees was what did it.
I loved how Evie became stronger in her stance along the book and I loved when both she and Richard told each other off. Each of them needed to hear what they heard.
Richard was somewhat frustrating to me because he insisted so much on not marrying and never stopped to think what were the actually consequences of his actions and I say this because even though he spent the whole book saying they couldn’t be together because of society and all that, he still chose to give in to his desires and create an even bigger “scandal” without hearing what Evie was actually saying.
I loved how Evie decided kidnapping Richard was a good idea, I was cheering for her and for Richard to gain some sense at the same time.
In the end I also loved that Richard’s plan B was kidnapping, it seemed fitting. 🙂
I had a great time with this series and I can’t wait to read more of Stacy Reid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Excellent and really made you think
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2017
Brilliant, Brilliant read (and I never say that) that had me thinking about how things in this era really were.

I love historical romances and sci fi romances it brings me to a place that can only live in the imagination but this book really brought facts, that I already knew, to the fore and made me want to stand up and cheer Richard on in his quest to save the innocent..

Stacy Reid brought the horror of what it really was like to live in that period to life and I think that other authors should take a leaf out of her book. Well done Miss Reid.

One ARC reviewer dropped a star from their rating because they said the hero Richard had a violent streak, she said 'he saved children but then committed murder'. Well for one, going on that premise, would have given this ten stars. He kill those who had abused, imprisoned, tortured, raped, killed and sold young children, in my book and in the times and circumstances he found himself in this was the best punishment. The same reviewer never touched on the fact that young children were put in jail for crimes of poverty or even hanged for stealing a bit of food...why?

The upper class aristocracy lived in a place far removed from the real world, bit like things in today's world, and they ignored or abused those they class beneath them. The aristocracy involved in these crimes would or could not be held accountable and I was only sorry he didn't end a few of those as well.

Ok so rave over ...There was only thing I didn't like about this book was Richards tendency to sneer and show contempt of Evie's understanding of how truly impoverished and desolated the lives of poor was. He never really gave her a chance, I know he felt that she lived in a gilded cage, which was true but he was her friend for six years and I feel he should have told her about the things he had discovered when he went to find his daughter.

I will undoubtedly reread this book and really hope that the next in the series is as good.

Note to author: Please stop giving people free books for their ARC's this is beneath you and your wonderful work... let your real fans state it as it is.
