StarTech.com SATA to USB Cable - USB 3.0 to 2.5” SATA III Hard Drive Adapter - External Converter for SSD/HDD Data Transfer (USB3S2SAT3CB) -- byStarTech.com
=====================================
BOTTOM LINE
These adapters are a great tool to have around, for inspecting old drives, cloning drives (done that), etc.
If you think you might need one of these, you probably do. They're one of those things you don't think about until you need them and then they're invaluable.
PEERING INTO THE PAST
Over the course of many years I accumulated a stack of 2.5" SATA drives from old laptops that died or were retired due to reasons other than drive failure. I was pretty sure I had moved all of my files off of the drives but of course I didn't record that anywhere.
So I bought this USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA adapter hoping to peer into the past. And it worked flawlessly on my Windows 10 machine. Plugged a drive into the SATA end and plugged the USB connector into my Win 10 computer and it was instantly recognized. Turns out there actually were some files on those drives I hadn't backed up or moved before pulling them.
And then I thought why not buy several adapters and let the Windows Storage Spaces Tool combine them and treat them as one drive? That's been on my mind for a while now but if you've shopped for SSD's lately, you've probably noticed how inexpensive they are now. So that leaves me with a stack of 2.5" mechanical drives. Maybe somebody on FreeCycle can use them.
AM I HAPPY WITH THIS ADAPTER?
I'm very happy with this cable and absolutely recommend them. If your computer(s) have 2.5" drives, and you are the designated Support person - you should have one of these cables, IMHO.
Downside! Yes there is one. The day after receiving it and beginning to use it, I got a text from StarTech.com alerting me to a declined payment and a bizzare link for payment. Of course, I didn't click the link. Just blocked it and reported it as spam to my phone carrier. Since I didn't register the product the only way for them to get my number is through Amazon. That stinks. Needs to stop.
I did try on a 3.5" drive, and they likely need external power (did not connect drive to computer). I do have a toaster over looking drive bay I use for larger drives.
