I like the enclosure.
Well Made. Fan is quiet. Fits into PC case well. Hard Drives slide into and fit well in the enclosure. The drive keepers did not fit well, but that did not impact the operation of the device.........

This thing keeps drive frosty cold and makes swapping drives in and out of a custom NAS or server incredibly easy.

    Pros:
    • Very sturdy construction
    • Every drive bay has its own independent power switch so at any time you can kill power to a specific drive, let it spin down and pull it.
    • The LEDs do look nice and at least the fan LEDs can be switch off. The drive LEDs however are always on.
    • The fans are very quiet (I have 4 of these) on all of my bays.

    Cons (Minimal):
    • The bays are a little long so even in a large case, if your sata ports are on the edge of the board (like on this board [...]) you will have a lot of trouble getting everything to fit properly and even then it may be a little dicey.
    • The drives have to be attached with screws to a handle that lockes the drive in place and gives you something to pull the drive with. Not a big deal at all unless you are swapping drives constantly.
    • While the LEDs look cool, they are insanely bright blue so if this is going to go anywhere near where you sleep, plan to have them turned off.
    • The fans only power on if there is a drive in the bay powered on. Don't plan to be able to use these for cooling while they are empty.

My freenas box has 12 drives in it. All easily accessible through these bays and the box runs cool.
If you need a lot of swappable drive space and a lot of cooling power for those drives, I highly recommend these bays.

If you have an antec 300-1200 case, I highly recommend switching to these bays. It will make your life a LOT easier when drives need to be swapped without sacrificing form or function and you will have more drive bays than you started with.

The only reason I picked up two of these was the Rosewill competitor keeps going in and out of stock and my order got delayed by 2 weeks, but I needed to get something in my server. I'll compare it to the Rosewill I wanted as I imagine many people are shopping between the two.

    Cons:
    - $20 more expensive than the Rosewill competitor.
    - Lets go with "striking" in appearance. I personally don't care for the look at all, but I can see why some do like it. I got these for a home server where the looks don't matter, which is why I'm not certain why looks matter at all on a product like this? Are that many gamers really adding hotswap to their rigs?
    - The only way this mounts into a case/chassis is the bracket on the bottom. If your case/chassis will have these mounted as pictured that shouldn't be a big problem as gravity will assist. if you will have to mount them "sideways" you'll have a bit of trouble keeping them stable. It's not a huge problem but adds a tiny worry when moving around the system as a whole.
    - Replacing the fan requires a lot more work than it probably should. The stock fan is a strange adapter, a normal 3pin fan adapter than a 2 pin adapter that I assume is for the LED's? Suggests to me that if you do replace the fan you'll have trouble using both the speed and LED controller switchs on this. My replacement fans are 4pin PWM fans so I used extensions so I can get them plugged into the motherboard.
    - Removing the filter was a problem on one unit, not too bad on the other. There were a few other "really hard" and "not bad" differences between the two units I got, suggesting manufacturing tolerances and/or quality control is somewhat lax.

    Pros:
    - SATA power adapters instead of MOLEX. More and more power supplies are dropping MOLEX power adapters in favor of SATA.
    - Fan speed and Fan LED switches on the front. The Rosewill doesn't have LED lights in it's fans but having the option to disable it is always good.

    "It's a wash" differences:
    - Fan in front of cage instead of behind. Kind of a personal preference thing. The problem with it being in front is more of the fan noise escapes the case, so depending on where this is going you'll hear the fans more. On the other hand, having the fans in front of the drive cage means the air is likely colder.
    - Having the fan up front requires a door, which is why those handles are there. The fan door/handle thing is acceptable, but the design of it is lacking. First, removing it if you want is annoying. Second, if you do remove it good luck opening the door at all. Oh, you can, but it's rough.

I knocked off a couple stars because of a number of strange design decisions and the spotty quality control. However, both units function as they should and overall the product delivers. I think it should probably be cheaper than it is, but it's hard enough finding the cheaper alternative so maybe Icy Dock knows what they're doing in that regard.

I had high expectations, and it seemed to have fulfilled its purpose, but with such an incredible design its really sad that a few things weren't a little bit better. I have owned the product one day, and due to some flaws with the product I have already started breaking it. Pretty much the really bad instructions don't make it obvious how to remove the handle, and the right handle conflicts with your case preventing the door opening all the way. I ended up taking the grill off the fan and forcing my drives by the fan (didn't really want to have to take out the really difficult to turn fan screws), which broke HD LED 1, so now I don't use that bay since I only have 3 drives. If I push on the door to force another drive in, the HD LED 1 starts working again, so thats how I know its related. After getting the entire thing in my computer and partially breaking it I figured out how to remove the right handle, but why did it even come with this? This could so easily be a 5 star product, but I just cannot give it 5 stars because I broke it trying to use it on the first day, but not in such a horrible way that I want to RMA it. This is so close to being a 5 star product that everyone should have in their computer, but it just needs a few finishing touches:

    1. Separate electronic interface from hinge for door so stress from pushing the door open to install drives does not break the leds, switches, wiring, etc. or

    2. Make things easier to remove, like the fan, or the door. Screwless fan would make this 5 star product.

    3. Give better documentation on how to use the product, not 6pt font on receipt like paper written in 10 langauges all next to eachother. I saw the diagram on how to remove the handles but didn't understand it at all. It made it seem like they just popped off.

    4. Increase the price point a little and design a little better tray system. Take a look at something like dyconn with their hot swap screwless trays. I ended up just pushing the drives directly in and not using the front trays at all

    5. If you are going to put LED levels on the fan, please make the low level actually low. It's pretty much on/off, and I leave it off

    6. The on/off buttons on the HDs are very very cheap and it is hard to tell which ones are on and off by the buttons alone.

If you read this far, you probably want to hear the good as well

    1. Great design to slide into a computer case that has small tabs for HDs to rest on. It slides right past those with ease! I put mine into the top 3 slots of an antec case, and the bottom 6 slots have HD fan bays so the entire front is blue fans (if I have the top super bright fan LEDs on)

    2. It was able to fit in my mid tower and not conflict with my huge CPU cooler or any connections on my motherboard. It would conflict with my video card if I tried to install it on the 4/5/6 slots rather than 1/2/3, as my video card is longer than my motherboard.

    3. Overall just a great product and I wish it was a little bit better and cost a little bit more because I like the idea a lot and would like a perfect version of this one day. It's a lot of plastic and rather flimsy which is how I damaged it but it works and the price point is good for what it was. I would pay more for this product though if it was full metal, had better trays, and a removable / replaceable fan.

Bought this as I needed to get some more decommissioned HDDs in my tower as a backup to my NAS. I replaced a nice looking Lian Li 120mm fan assembly which I used to help blast air into the case from the front.

The IcyDock was a bit of a pain to get in and I found that the cable shroud in the right hand side was a bit too thick, it made pushing the unit into the case difficult and was squeezed so much that the HDD 2 power switch was squeezed so as not to spring back when turned off. The cable also got pulled out from the PCB on the rear meaning the HDD lights didn't work so I had to pull it out again, make sure HDD 2 power switch was on, slide it back in and hope the lights worked.

Aesthetically it looks kind of cheap, I just need something with a fan that holds HDDs so I'm not that precious about it but appreciate some might be. The Lian Li had a really nice looking metal finish, this looks cheap and platic-cy, because it is.

Can't comment on the stock fan as I replaced it with the Corsair static pressure fan I used before. That seems to get enough air through the assembly. In my tower the front, rear and bottom case fan speeds are all tied to the case temperature sensors but fans don't appear to have to work any harder and the three HDDs currently in the IcyDock are happy enough at around 30 degrees.
Anyone having issues with heat should probably swap out the stock fan for a static pressure unit to force the air in through the filter and through the HDDs, it's quite a small space between HDDs and I don't thing a high airflow fan would do the job too well, especially as it has a mesh filter blocking air already.
