I wanted a 2nd SNES pad for 2 player action but just couldn't bring myself to pay another 50 dollars so I did some research and discovered the buffalo brand has quite a following from new and old gamers alike.
For the price, I couldn't say no and decided to get one.
I'm happy to report that it performs flawlessly and feels great. Side by side comparisons vs the original Japan controller (as most likely noted by numerous reviewers here) are that the buffalo controller is slightly lighter, slightly thinner and vs the original famicom pad, the dpad is slightly elevated on the buffalo controller.
The differences are marginal and the only REAL noticable difference to my seasoned retro gaming hands is the lighter weight of the buffalo controller. I have ordered a roll of lead tape and will weigh out a strip of that and apply it onto the inside wall of the back half of the controller shell to match the weight of the original controller. Other than that minor nit-picking there is very little to complain about.
If I had to change anything, it'd be to have the turbo buttons moved further up towards the top of the game pad. It's easy to accidentally press them instead of start/select. I don't actually use them so I may end up just removing the buttons all together.
I've attached numerous photos comparing the weight of the 2 game pads and thickness at various parts of the controller.
Bottom line is that if you want a near 100% authentic replica of the original super famicom game pad, look no further. Yes there are minor differences but the price gap between a real one and this one is FAR beyond the point of diminishing returns in my opinion unless you're a collector, which in that case, you most likely already have one or more of the original game pads anyways.

So enough complaining. How do these controllers compare to real SNES controllers? They compare very well. I have two lightly used SNES controllers and 4 decently used SNES controllers plus one heavily used controller. The A, B, X, Y, L,R, Start and Select buttons feel just like the buttons on my real SNES controllers ( the lightly used controllers I have). They have a click to them when you press down but its not a cheap stiff click. Its that familiar smooth click that feels just right.
The D-Pad on these controllers does have a different feel compared to the real SNES controllers. First the D-Pad sits higher, second it has a longer travel and third it feels slightly tactile, but not stiff. Even with those differences it doesn't affect gameplay what so ever. I'm able to control every game I've played so far with no issues at all. The D-Pads on these Buffalo SNES and NES controllers actually work! I can't say the same about the junk USB controllers I bought before these.
The Turbo Features on these controllers come in handy and do what they are supposed to do. Just pause the game ( so you don't die), hold down the turbo button and then simply press whatever button you need to have the turbo function. To clear just hold down the clear button and press the button you programmed to have the turbo function.
Overall I can't recommend these controllers enough. I was actually smiling the whole time I was using my emulator. It feels good using a quality peace of hardware.
I would really like for Buffalo Technology to make controllers for my NES, SNES, N64 and Sega Genesis consoles. Its getting hard to find good original controllers for the older consoles. If Buffalo Technology can make USB controllers this good, then I know they can make reproduction controllers for my old video game consoles.
One more thing Buffalo tech should also consider making a USB six button Sega Genesis controller. The larger six button controller not the smaller version.
This game pad is a perfect replica of the classic Super Nintendo Entertainment
System controller. It conveniently connects to the PC via a USB port, and
sports a long cable that allows a fair distance before it you have to worry about tugging. The
controller itself is well constructed. It won't break easily and ensure
it won't simply snap the cord while play. (under normal usage of course)
It is worth noting that this will only function on a computer, and the games it can be used for are limited, as
it lacks a number of buttons most systems and games require today, which is
due to the age of the design.
If you are considering this item, chances are you are looking for something for
those classic games anyway. For that purpose however, it does its job
and functions perfectly. I encountered no issues with the controller itself and
it proved very responsive.
As one can see, the item is a controller to connect to your computer in order to
play PC games that support a controller. It lacks the trigger buttons and analog
sticks that all modern controllers require, effectively limiting its usability to retro
games with limited control schemes. For that purpose however, it does its job
and functions perfectly, and in all likelihood if you're looking to buy this controller
it's for that reason anyway. I encountered no issues with the controller itself and
it proved very responsive.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope this information has been helpful
to you if you are considering purchasing this product.

Top reviews from other countries
Setting the controller up is a snap. It's a generic DirectInput device so Windows will recognise it and know exactly what to do with it straight away, it also claims to be compatible with Windows versions from Windows 98 through to XP though my box has got extra stickers put on to include Windows 7 - 10. (this is a technology that has been perfected years ago but I'm glad they haven't locked compatibility behind a reliance on proprietry drivers which cause issues with other hardware or software or make the controller unrecognisable by other devices like Android Tablets etc.). After connecting the controller, it's a case of mapping the buttons to the ones on the controller in your preffered emulator. I have tried this out so far with Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Micro Machines, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter 2 Turbo and F-Zero and haven't stopped being amazed at how good this controller feels for these games, it is so natural you will feel like your PC, laptop or tablet has been transformed into a SNES.
There are 2 (very very, VERY) minor nitpicks that I have for this controller. They have zero impact on the actual use of the controller but I feel it worth mentioning for some reason.
1:I would have liked Windows to recognise the name of the controller rather than only reffering to it as a "USB, 2 axis 8 button gamepad" (though this might make the controller less compatible with other devices as another controller that I have which Windows does show the name of doesn't work with Android).
2: I personally would have liked a font for the Start/Select (and Turbo/Clear Buttons) which was more like the one present on the official SNES controller, for some reason the bold non-italic font is mildly bothering to me. (this is actually because this is modelled after the Super Famicom, the Japanese SNES whch uses that font... oh well)
3:This is a Japanese product, therefore, it ships from Japan, if you have an Amazon Prime membership or a pending free trial, I would probably recommend using it if the seller will let you, I used a cheaper seller so I couldn't anyway but the controller took about 2 and a half weeks to get to me from when I ordered it. Unfortunately, most Japanese sellers I've seen on Amazon only use basic airmail rather than paying the extra couple of hundred Yen to upgrade to registered airmail which is so much more reliable and you can track where your item is as well as reduces delays. This just means you either have to wait, or shop elsewhere if you want it fast. (so worth the wait though). The box and manual are also in Japanese so if you can't read or interpret it (I'm semi-fluent in Japanese and struggle with the explanation of how the Turbo and Clear buttons work), though there's enough English on the box to help you out.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a controller for your SNES emulator which provides an authentic experience, look no further. Seriously, the only way you will get a more authentic experience is with an official SNES controller and a pad converter. (but would it be worth it?) . Would I recommend this controller? YES! if you use a SNES Emulator, this is a worthy addition to your gaming arsenal, I would only not recommend it perhaps if you have a decent enough controller that you use for your emulators or maybe if you really, really despise the SNES controller, or if you honestly looked at this, read all about it and didn't get the urge to buy one.
The quality of the controller is far beyond what I was expecting when I received my pair in the mail. The body is solid and the buttons are firmly in place, no wiggling, no popping in or out of their sockets. Probably the biggest issue I have come across concerning these types of devices are the actual USB cables. The cable itself has a nice thickness and good amount of flexibility, not a thin brittle coating you find one a lot of off brands. Where the USB cable and controller meet is also a very sound and secure connection. I have the cable a (cautious) tug while holding the controller and it seemed very solid, with no give when I pulled.
The buttons on the controller are fantastic. The response time is phenomenal and indistinguishable from playing the actual cartridge on the console (SNES for my purposes). Also, the material of the buttons is pretty much identical to the original SNES controller, rubber start and select (as well as the added Turbo and Clear buttons), smooth hard plastic on the A,B,X and Y buttons, and the textured hard plastic on the Dpad and L and R buttons. I liked that the action buttons had the rainbow colour scheme from the PAL versions of the SNES controller, it was a nice difference considering I am used the NA pink and purple color scheme.
The one issue I thought i was going to have was the weight of the controller. Comparing it to an original SNES, it's quite a bit lighter, however, after plugging it into my Raspberry Pi and playing for a few minutes I had forgotten all about its weight. All in all, this is a fantastic purchase for those who have a passion for retro gaming on their PC/Pi devices. The attention to detail that was put into this USB controller will have you forgetting you are merely emulating the old classics and bring you back to the good old days of 8bit/16bit gaming.
*One thing to note, though I generally use mine through my Pi to play NES and SNES, i have tested this with a range of emulated systems that share a similar button config and it does the trick with flying colours.
We had a Super Nintendo back in the days. My brother and I played countless hours with its controllers, and as everybody who plays videogames knows, soon you don't need to think and the fingers seem to move on their own will. A month ago, visiting our parents, we setup the Super Nintendo and played again: all these memories came back immediately, and with them, the skill with the controllers!
I bought the Buffalo Gamepad when I came back to my place, and I have been playing with it for about week. It looks like the classic one (with the exception of the two extra buttons on top of select + start), feels like the classic one, and reacts like the classic one! I am playing with a Raspberry Pi to the games of my childhood, and it almost feels the same!
