What they're saying:
“The Chemist” . . . is far and away one of the most original and just flat-out interesting and crazy thriller/suspense fiction novels I’ve read in forever.” Jhonni Parker—Goodreads.com
“I was hooked from the first pages of “The Chemist” and much to my surprise my interest never faded for a moment! . . . [T]he author Alan J. Field brings a fresh attitude and literary style and makes it all his own and doesn’t just rehash the same old plot lines we’ve seen a million times before which makes this book wholly unique.” Steph Coleman—Goodreads.com
“It is incredibly well-constructed with impressively complex plotlines that are terrifying, yet strangely believable.” Essie Harmon—Goodreads.com
“Love the whole “cat and mouse” and “racing against the clock” feel that totally kept me hostage night after night. He has a natural gift for crafting a well-thought-out story and developing complex, memorable, if not disturbing characters who take you on a dark and wild ride that will totally engulf you.” Laura Clarke—Goodreads.com
“Fast paced, well-written and disturbingly plausible, Field crafts an engrossing novel that stays with you long after you are done.” John Goodman—Goodreads.com
“Try and be bored reading this… just try. I dare ya! . . . I think Field had a fun time coming up with some of the weirdest, most original ‘personalities’ that I’ve encountered lately. It’s all just a big game, and one that is fascinating, disturbing, and deliciously fun to read.” Claire Middleton—Goodreads.com
The most virulent weapon of mass destruction will be unleashed upon the world, but Delta Force veteran Daniel Strong isn't about to let that happen. Recalled from the depths of drug addiction and depression, Danny is the last chance for the CIA to stop an auction in New York where powerful weapons dealers are to bid for the right to proliferate a deadly neurotoxin. The road to finding the auction's location leads directly to the weapon's creator: a devil in Tory Burch flats and heroin addict who has committed the chemical compound to memory. Yet Danny isn't the only one chasing her. He must protect her from a sadistic Palestinian terrorist known only as Sabir, who wants to use the weapon to destroy Israel and will do anything--including torture--to get it. Danny must walk a fine line to control his obsession to resolve a dark secret from his past and his feelings for the chemist that could compromise the operation's objective--before it's too late.

Review
Whoa... what an insane book! Holy bananas!! Okay, I don t even know where to begin because so much happens and I don t want to give anything away... The Chemist by author Alan J. Field is far and away one of the most original and just flat-out interesting and crazy thriller/suspense fiction novels I ve read in forever. I liked it for so many different reasons: first the writing was really solid and had great flow (and editing!!). The fluid, fast-paced narrative, short chapters, and engaging dialogue makes it a very easy book to sink into. There are enough descriptions where you can picture everything perfectly, but not so much that it bogs down the pacing. The characters are so incredibly interesting and have depth (flaws, secrets) and yet believable (for the most part a few over the top aspects but still we can buy into them for entertainment s sake)and I like how they all had their own unique stories and backgrounds that lead them to what/who they are, especially Danny. The alternating POV chapters gave great insight into all the different characters motivations and gave the story a well-rounded feel without giving anything away. Great pacing and high stakes tension, and it was fascinating to see how it all came together in the end, and while it wraps up on one level the door is definitely open for more. Recommend for mature readers thriller/suspense and I d be happy to read more in this series when available! --Jhonni Parker - Goodreads.com

About the author
Having practiced as a lawyer in New York for more than 20 years in the entertainment and high technology space, I knew it was time to step back and write what I like to read about: gripping international thrillers that laser beam on relevant geopolitical issues of the day.
I live in northern New Jersey with my wife and four children, myself being a South Jersey transplant. They keep me busy enough which made completing my first novel all that more incredible. I know this is just the beginning as I begin the next journey of writing a sequel.
All my prior published legal articles aside, this is my first crack at fiction. Sharing my story with others has been a thrilling and satisfying experience.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2017enjoying the book. Great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2017Talk about a twisted web of deceit. This was a pleasant surprise and a good start to a series. It was an entertaining, engaging and interesting story with plenty of mystery, intrigue, action and suspense. There's also a bit of romance woven into the mix. ( As you can tell from the cover). It's definitely not predictable either, it goes from one twist to another. It keeps you on your toes trying to figure out what is going to happen next.
It took me a couple of chapters to be completely pulled into the story but once I was it kept my attention until the end. There were a couple of times the writing could have been a bit more polished. On several occasions the same thing is being said in a slightly different way or the same information repeated within a couple of lines. It happened enough for me to notice it but not enough to effect my overall enjoyment of the story.
The story is told through several different POV's and has a good cast of interesting characters. Both likable and many unlikable. Actually most of the characters are more unlikable but they great.
A chemist that has an addiction to drugs is a dangerous thing. I'm surprised Kate didn't go insane from everything that was going on. Talk about head games, manipulation and deception. There is enough going on in this story to make a sane person go insane. Even though there is a reason for the route they (CIA) take to get the information they are after, it is an evil unto itself.
Eric G. Dove does a great job with the narration. I haven't listened to a book he has narrated in a while. Seeing that he was the narrator is part of what drew me to the story. Side note I had never realized before that he was a signer. Nice voice weather signing or narrating that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. His narration is clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Good character voices. He is able to bring the characters and story to life through his narration. Very enjoyable.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2016Reading The Chemist by Alan Field was a lot of fun. An easy and exciting read, this book brings together science, big business, terrorism, espionage and special operations, while telling the story of a young woman who created the deadliest neurotoxin known to humanity. There's a number of different characters, each of whom pursues his / her own agenda, which makes the reader curious to see how their conflicts of interests will resolve in the end. The struggle for power through weapons of mass destruction is an interesting and contemporary topic, as there are many groups who place little value on human life. For some, it is a means to an end, enabling terrorism. For others, it is a necessary sacrifice, or "an acceptable loss," in Field's words.
Thus, while unraveling plot twists, the author also raises important questions, for example: can or should one take pride in his / her work if that work leads to mass destruction? In other words, The Chemist is not just an action thriller; it also delves into people's psychology and strives to uncover the motivation behind their actions. With this said, action and suspense keep the reader engaged all the time and wondering what happens next.
Set in New York City, The Chemist also lets us travel to the city's various places of interest. However, in most scenes those places are mentioned without much description or detail. Their main purpose is to be the background for the action. It would have been even more interesting to see the city through the eyes of different characters and get more of a feel of the city.
While the city serves as a background, the author's main focus stays with the action and the characters' thoughts and feelings. We get to know the good guys and the bad guys and sympathize with some of them. Unlike in many other action books, most characters are complex rather than flat, and it's interesting to learn about their past, their mistakes, and their strong traits as well as their flaws. Writing about the CIA and their operations, Field uses a lot of terminology, which he rarely explains. While some readers may find it distracting or even annoying, it allows us to get a sense of their language and mindset, even if we do not understand all terms and abbreviations.
Hence, if you're planning on reading The Chemist, you need to remember that it's an action-driven book with some character development. Since the author's main purpose is to describe what the characters are doing and feeling, there are not many creative descriptions of the setting (though there're plenty of clever metaphors), but you'll be constantly kept in suspense, thinking about what happens next. Even if you're confused about the language, or at times unclear about what is happening, you will never be bored and won't put the book down until you're done with it.
