Purchase options and add-ons
The science is clear. The results are unmistakable.
You can dramatically reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes just by changing your diet.
More than 30 years ago, nutrition researcher T. Colin Campbell and his team at Cornell, in partnership with teams in China and England, embarked upon the China Study, the most comprehensive study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease. What they found when combined with findings in Colin's laboratory, opened their eyes to the dangers of a diet high in animal protein and the unparalleled health benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet.
In 2005, Colin and his son Tom, now a physician, shared those findings with the world in The China Study, hailed as one of the most important books about diet and health ever written.
Featuring brand new content, this heavily expanded edition of Colin and Tom's groundbreaking book includes the latest undeniable evidence of the power of a plant-based diet, plus updated information about the changing medical system and how patients stand to benefit from a surging interest in plant-based nutrition.
The China StudyRevised and Expanded Edition presents a clear and concise message of hope as it dispels a multitude of health myths and misinformation. The basic message is clear. The key to a long, healthy life lies in three things: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

He is co-author of "The China Study," a worldwide bestseller, with his father T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and author of “The China Study Solution.” He has presented widely on the topic of nutrition for optimal health.
For more than 40 years, Dr. T. Colin Campbell has been at the forefront of nutrition research. His legacy, the China Project, is the most comprehensive study of health and nutrition ever conducted. Dr. Campbell is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University. He has more than 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding and authored more than 300 research papers and coauthor of the bestselling the book, "The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health."
"The China Study" gave us a simple but powerful answer: Eat a diet based on whole, plant-based food, and dramatically reduce your risk of a broad spectrum of diseases, including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancer.
In his new book, "Whole," Dr. Campbell picks up where "The China Study" left off. "The China Study" revealed what we should eat and provided the powerful empirical support for this answer. "Whole" answers the question of why. Why does a whole-food, plant-based diet provide optimal nutrition? "Whole" demonstrates how far the scientific reductionism of the nutrition orthodoxy has gotten offtrack and reveals the elegant wonders of the true holistic workings of nutrition, from the cellular level to the operation of the entire organism. "Whole" is a marvelous journey through cutting-edge thinking on nutrition, led by one of the masters of the science.

I bought a copy 5+ years ago, read it and then borrowed it out. Because I felt the book was of such benefit to the individual I borrowed it to, I never asked for it back, but just bought an additional copy. I'm now reading and highlighting this book for a second time.
I know this book has changed my life for the better! Following a WFPB Diet as explained in this book has helped me lose weight, improve my eye sight, decreased inflammation, among other positive health effects!
This book is great as a gift as well!
When I recently became a little older(30), and started looking into how to eat healthy, much of the most available information was very conflicting. Was the healthiest way to eat and live Paleo, raw, Bulletproof, Vegan, or something else. I read though "How Not to Die" -Micheal Greger, and came away more than surprised that there is a very simple, proven(supported in hundreds of ways by thousands of studies over the past 50 years or more) way that everyone should eat whether they are sick or not. Both Dr. Greger's book and The China Study are partially summaries of hundreds of research studies and that is what it took for me to be convinced. These are very different from "diet" books that are published almost solely to make money. I am convinced that both Campbell and Greger only care about getting the actual scientific evidence to the public. I know Dr. Greger gives all the money from his book sales to his notprofit website(nutritionfacts.org) But just read for yourself and see.
I began with the WFPB diet about 2 months ago and follow it probably 90% of the time(I don't let it interfere much in social situations, and still have a few beers). While I felt great before starting, and didn't have much to improve physically, the only difference I have noticed so far is that I am starting to see my abs(which I have never really been able to do.) Currently have a 4 pack but am pretty confident it will turn into 8 in a few months. Also while my B/P and cholesterol were "normal"(for the "healthy" american) last time I had them checked, I'm pretty sure they will be much lower the next time, and close to as actually healthy as they can be.
(Edit- 4 months later B/P down to 105/63 from 132/80)
The last quarter of this book, especially the new edition had some pretty amazing information including a multiple decade long inside look at how Big Medicine, Big Pharma, the government, the meat and dairy industries, and even universities have prevented the actual science from reaching the public, but allow their own business/industry supporting versions.
One amazing example is how Dr. Esselstyn(a previous famous cardiac surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic) now treats many of the senior staff at the clinic with the WFPB lifestyle change, but is basically prevented in many ways by the clinic from treating the public. The senior staff know the actual best treatment for CAD but will not support it for the public in place of meds and surgery!
I am actually starting medical school at a well known university in two months, and am excited to be a physician that will treat people in the best way possible, based on a summation of all the research(including the wholistic type). And that may be starting them on a WFPB diet(even though I'm pretty sure I will not learn that in med school).
"How did we get to a place where the companies that profit from out sickness are the ones telling us how to be healthy; where the companies that profit from our food choices are telling us what to eat; where the public's hard-earned money is being spent by the government to boost the drug industry's profits; and where there is more distrust than trust of our government's policies on foods, drugs, and health? How did we get to a place where Americans are so confused about what is healthy that they no longer care?"
In this book Campbell backs up all of these statements that are very sad but true. Read it, be open minded, and I bet it will change your life for the better.
The healing that is taking place in my body since breaking off all ties to toxic foods and enjoying simple recipes using fruits, vegetables, brown rice, beans, and lots of green leafs, etc. is nothing short of miraculous! I feel energetic, younger, in a better mood, better able to handle stressful situations and just happier!
Please read this book and share it with friends and family. I also recommend Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. McDougall's books. They've changed my life. As far as films, I'm forever grateful for the story of Phil on "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" which inspired me to get off my butt and do this already. Also, "That Sugar Film" is a must see. But if you want a summary of what's on this wonderful book, The China Study, watch "Forks Over Knives" on Netflix.
You CAN reverse disease! I'm living proof. I feel healthier but I also have the improved cholesterol reports to prove it. I just can't wait to get a new RA panel to compare with the old, terrible one.
Break up with processed foods, dairy and meats the same way you'd break off a relationship with a toxic person. Just walk away and never look back. You'll love the new you. :)
The revised edition I received is printed on thin, textured, beige paper with both grey & black text. It’s difficult to read and not as nice to hold.

There's so much in here, which I'm sure the other reviewers have covered in depth.
My slant into this is a return to becoming fully plant based. I'm 58yrs and consider myself well above average fitness. I'm flexible, capable of pushing some decent weights, and a Tai Chi Teacher. I've pretty much given up refined sugars as much as is possible. Mainly to offset arthritis. Yet.....
There's been this naggy inner spidy sense that tells me I need to radically change my diet. I've been vegan for 3 years back from 2003 to 2006. So I kind of know what I'm getting into here.
In the last comple of years, I feel that although I can get everything done physically I want, the cost is having to sleep up to 9 hours a day. Sometimes more. It's been getting worse recently. I've factored in training with very heavy weights for my build and age: late nights 2am-3am bedtime on days off etc.
The last 6 months I've had this calling to return to plant-based. I'm going to be honest here and say "gamechangers" on Netflix was so powerful that I instantly was given the "on" switch and pretty much became vegan within 24 hours of watching it.
I found an unread vegan book in my kindle library and it highlighted this book.
The extensive study(Chinese gathering of data) of Cancer pockets in China, opened a snapshot in time possibly never to be repeated, to study the data and visit the regions of healthy and unhealthy areas.
I loved the analogy of if you want 100% proof of something, throw a ball in the air and watch the effects of gravity bring it back down to the ground.
To find 100% proof of links into diet and poor health doesn't exist at this time. But 95% and 99% does exist.
How does this book flow? I found it very interesting and readable. It is endless though! But if you want to load yourself with data on the positive effects of going plant-based, you'll have enough data to crush nearly(99%) all arguments against it.
Here's an interesting quote from Dr. John MaDougall, a prominent surgeon about his education and how much attention was given to nutrition:
=="John finished his formal medical education having had only one hour of nutrition instruction, which involved learning which infant formulas to use. His experience confirms every study that has found nutrition training among physicians to be sorely inadequate."==
After 2 weeks I've lost 1.5kg. My strength with weights has not diminished. My recovery after 3hr weight sessions suggests that all the extra nutrients received in increasing my vegetables really are very powerful.
The weight loss was truly effortless. Almost too easy! I'd say that I've gone very clean with my diet. No sexy sauces added; lots of fiber and raw veggies.
Protein, so far from the plants, chick peas, kidney beans, some soya products, sproud(waitrose) milk substitute, bread(Waitrose sunflower and pumpkin seeds (2 slices)), various colourful veggies etc. Baked Potatoes and rice.
I should also add that even having reduced half of the meat-based protein I was having, I still couldn't really get a proper shift in weight loss.
Going Vegan==
I noticed almost immediately a lifting of my mood! Like a heavy burden had dissolved. Also currently under the cosh financially there was an underlying fear brewing(unknown to me at the time). That significantly lifted too. Inner biological workings improved:) My mind is a lot clearer. Addictions, especially reading the news online lifted too. A significant reduction in sweet-tooth cravings. So a significant positivity has arisen.
I've a working theory on the 'fear factor'. Could we be absorbing the fear of death from the cells of the meat and sadness from the dairy? (triggering:)
I hope to add a bit more to this review in time.
Update 11th Jan 2020
--------------------------
More personal than book related.... Im trying to plateau my weight between 76.5kg to 77.5kg. Currently 76.8kg from 80.8kg.
My partner since going 100% vegan on 1st Jan 2020 lost 2.2kg. She tried the intermittent fasting twice a week and didn't really lose anything for about 5 months. Partial vegan didn't seem to shift anything in the last month of December 2019.
Lots of veggies, mixed colours, leafy also twice a day just really sets the gold standard for the diet. Wrap the grains, rice, potatoes into the mix and a variety of protein sources.
My last note here is if you're having any desserts regularly then don't expect great weight loss results. My current gym manager is a massive guy about 6 foot 6, lots of fat, extremely strong but must weigh around 140-150kg. So you are what you eat. But If you eat loads of vegetables some with high fiber its not easy to continue eating unless it's got addictive additives in it.
