In The Awakened Ape Jevan Pradas uses evolutionary psychology to hack the human mind and body to answer the question: "How can we enjoy life to the fullest?" The results, while unexpected, are completely backed by science.
Perpetually bored, anxious, fatigued and overweight, modern society has failed to deliver the happiness it promised. The remedy, Jevan argues, is in a unique synthesis of a Paleolithic lifestyle and Buddhist meditation.
A sprawling journey, featuring Jevan's adventures with naked Amazonian tribes and retreats with enlightened monks to learn the secrets of optimal well-being, The Awakened Ape will teach you how to achieve deep states of bliss. All while shaping your body into the fit and healthy animal millions of years of evolution programmed you to be.
You will learn:
How to meditate -- from instructions for the absolute beginner to techniques for deep states of ecstasy and awakening
How to eat the optimally healthy diet for both physical and mental health
How to train the attention span so you can be focused and efficient all day long
How to exercise so that is fun, enjoyable, and something you look forward to
How to get rid of the habit of negative thinking in just one week
How to live like a caveman in the modern world in order to get the most out of your genetics
How to properly go to the bathroom (Yes, you have been doing it wrong)
And much, much, more..

Most times the big "life altering a-ha moment" remains allusive but if the read is lite and amusing and provides enjoyable escape from the stresses of work, or raising a family then I'll consider it a fair trade.
I found the Awakened Ape both entertaining and informative as a lite introduction to anthropology woven into both health and wellness with enlightenment and spirituality. I was shocked at my own willingness to try the simple steps at introductory meditation (I recommend trying it in a bath, or hot-tub just for fun). Well After giving it a fair couple of tries I will say that there is definitely strong benefit and lingering side effects to it in all very positive ways.....I've read other books by new age authors espousing the benefits, but somehow they just didn't convince me to park my skepticism or pretense to surrender to a few 15 minute experiments like this book did...that in and of it self warranted five stars.
Traditional dogmatic buddhist or highly sensitive politically correct readers may sneer at Pradas' relaxed approach and his casual yet witty sexual references. This book isn't for you. But! You should read it, don't bother wasting time on the trolling review and send it to a friend or family member who might live a better life and gain some understanding into why you spend so much time on the cushion.
This book was so entertaining I literally read it front to back in one go. If you, or someone you love, is in need of some encouragement and guidance to lead a better life, but you want to be entertained as well, this book will do.

- he sometimes glorifies and romanticises tribes (though he did a scepticism chapter later on)
- he often calls the Paleo-Diet a good diet but when talking about specific foods (page 114/115) he doesn't really explain the Paleo-Diet but more something like the Blue-Zones-Diet (Dan Buettner)
Don't get me wrong this is great because science shows that abandoning yoghurt, cheese, oats and sweet potatoes from your diet is not improving health (if you're interested in a nutrition book read Dan Buettner - The Blue Zones Solution).
The second half of the book (starting with chapter IV) was so good I actually read it in one session. The way he writes and explains the ways of Buddhism is way different from the Buddhism books I've read before. It's far easier to understand the ideas and actually implement them in your life.
I'd even say that the book is still worth it if you are only interested in the second half of the book and would leave out the first chapters.
