Product Description
What happens when you put five strangers in Saturday detention? Badass posturing, gleeful misbehavior, and a potent dose of angst. With this exuberant film, writer-director John Hughes established himself as the bard of American youth, vividly and empathetically capturing how teenagers hang out, act up, and goof off. The Breakfast Club brings together an assortment of adolescent archetypes the uptight prom queen (Molly Ringwald), the stoic jock (Emilio Estevez), the foul-mouthed rebel (Judd Nelson), the virginal bookworm (Anthony Michael Hall), and the kooky recluse (Ally Sheedy) and watches them shed their personae and emerge into unlikely friendships. With its highly quotable dialogue and star-making performances, this film is an era-defining pop-culture phenomenon, a disarmingly candid exploration of the trials of adolescence whose influence now spans generations.

THOUGHTS: A deceptively simple film with a simple plot that is simply told, and told so very well. It's nothing you haven't seen before if you watch a lot of movies, but that doesn't take away from the power & poignancy of this inspiring little motion picture. The late John Hughes made several really good films, along with some meh product. I think THE BREAKFAST CLUB is easily in his top three. Good actors and a smart insightful script full of rich (if somewhat broadly painted) characters (both young & old), are aided by Hughes' unobtrusive directing. All these, along with a pitch perfect score & soundtrack (including that stirring iconic main/end theme from Simple Minds), combine to create a tiny piece of motion picture magic, one which perfectly crystallized what it means to suffer through those painfully awkward yet wonderful years we must all endure, as we transition from children to adults. Small-minded naysayers may poo-poo the film as being dull, stupid, or too simplistic/unrealistic but unless you lived under a rock and never interacted with anyone while in school then you probably knew (or were) one, some or all of these five kids. John Hughes’ THE BREAKFAST CLUB is a small triumph that has withstood the test of time, touching multiple generations. It likely will go on to do so for decades to come. Don't worry John, we won't forget about you.
THE BLU-RAY: Another in the long line of top tier releases from Criterion. The film looks fresh and clean, a result of the intensive 4k restoration process it went through. There's little to nothing in the way of artifacting, pixelation, crush, edge enhancement, DNR or other digital tampering that I could detect. Re-inserting some of the original music, which got excised and replaced due to licensing deals over the years, tops the list of stellar accomplishments Criterion achieved during the assemblage of this release. A massive amount of bonus content simply seals the deal, making this Criterion Collection edition of THE BREAKFAST CLUB a solid must-own, fer sure! Recommended.
While there is a lot of new items on this bluray, there are still a few scenes from the original cut of the movie that are not shown. Notably Allison's daydreaming sequence, her scene of sitting in the sound booth of the library singing to herself (a new interview on the bluray extras does show this scene, but not in its entirety), Bender reading a note that Brian's mom left him for lunch, Andrew collecting money from the others for drinks, and a scene where they are all sitting together on the railing. Some of these scenes can be found online since a TV broadcast featured a few of them (such as Andrew collecting money), while others can only be found as a short clip from the movie trailer and/or pictures taken on set. I can say that a few of the behind the scenes and interviews do showcase Brian's actor in costume for Allison's dream sequence.
Overall, this is my all time favorite movie and seeing new things that I haven't seen before is always exciting. Again, I am very satisfied by this release, if not one of the best bluray releases with so much content that is worth the price. My only itch that I have are the scenes that they haven't released which I was really hoping for. I still have hope that those will be released sometime in the future.
There is so much new stuff on this Edition, I would have to say definitively, it is THE BEST version that has ever come out.
The "30th Anniversary" does have a great restored picture as well, along with a "Trivia Track" about the movie that is NOT on this Criterion Edition.
There is also a featurette about what was termed "The Brat Pack" on the 30th that is NOT on the Criterion Edition. So, if you already have the 30th, I would keep it as a back up copy to the Criterion. Now, you have the most features ever for this movie.
Highly recommend getting this Edition, folks! If you are a fan of the movie or the actors, it's a keeper.
The packaging is really nice with inside graphics, photo, and nice liner notes.

La restauración es increíble, el material inedito igual y claramente, la importancia del detalle que se puso en craftear todo desde el arte del disco como el booklet que incluye, la recomiendo sin problemas.
Love: the deleted (never before seen) and extended scenes; the 4K conversion makes the resolution the best I have ever seen for this movie; the extra interviews (some are just audio and others are video) including John Hughes (r.i.p), Paul Gleason (r.i.p), Molly Ringwald & Emilio Estevez; the booklet that comes with the Blu-Ray that includes more pictures that I never saw before; and I’m still going through all of the other features on this release. I have the 30th Anniversary by Universal (which is also great as it contains a lot of extra features too but almost all of which is now included in this release) however I personally prefer this one. In any case, love having both editions to my collection. A beautiful trip down memory lane.
Grab this copy of the blu-ray if you love the TBC, you will not be disappointed.
The Brain. The Athlete. The Basʞet Case. The Princess. The Criminal.
Sincerely,
