Great Beginner Quadcopter, A HANDFULL Of FUN! Tough Across A LOT Of Crashes
The UDI RC U27 quadcopter drone is a handful of fun! This is my first RC aircraft and I'm a true beginner. If you are getting your first done I hope this will be helpful to you. If you are an experienced RC/Quadcopter pilot I hope some of this may be helpful for you too. The attached very short video shows the limit of trying to video while trying to fly - oops. The UDI kit came with everything I needed except 4 AAA batteries: RC Controller, The drone, 2 tiny flight batteries, a USB charger for the batteries, a pretty good instruction sheet and a spare set of propellers. This all came in a molded insert for the box which can be used to store the pieces when not in use. The controller take 4 AAA batteries which are not included, so plan ahead. The copter batteries came with what seemed a near full charge. The USB stick charger has a plug on the end that mates to the battery plug. A led on the side of the charger stays in (but not too bright, happily) till the battery is fully charged. When the light is out the battery is ready for use. Simple to understand and use.The RC U27 Quadcopter is only a little bigger than my hand. It looks spiffy with its back and silver body, red and black propellers (red=back) and LEDs (again red=back). It's very light, I'd guess between 2 and 3oz.The remote control has dual joysticks. The left controls lift (master rotor speed) and rudder (rotation about the vertical axis). The right controls forward/backward motion and left/right motion. This is relative to the direction of the drone: if the drone is facing you and you say go left it will go to your right! Something this beginner took a while to get a feel for. There are controls at bottom of the left and right sticks and to the left of the right stick for trim. What trim does is to compensate for a tendency for the copter to move one way or the other with the sticks in their neutral positions. For example, my copter tends to drift to the right, so I used the trim control to neutralize that bias. I also adjusted the trip on the left stick because my copter would slowly rotate when hovering. Getting your copter properly trimmed makes flying in control much easier! An important control is activated by pressing down the left (throttle) stick: the response speed. There is a small indicator on the left side of the controller screen which displays L, M or F which means Low Speed, Medium Speed or Fast Speed. This indicates how responsive the copter is to your inputs. Beginners like me should use the L speed! The instructions say the controller is set to L when powered on, but mine was at M. Changing that to L helped this beginner to avoid massive over-control of the copter while I was just getting a feel for flying it. For an experienced pilot at F speedOne of the fun aspects of the U27 are the two buttons on the front of the controller. They will tell the copter to flip and fly upside down. The left one flips to the left and the right one to the right. This is a very cool maneuver and this little button may impress your friends who don't know it's programmed into the copter! Make sure you have enough altitude before flipping!I found it is very cool how the copter seems to know it's orientation and flies equally well right side up or down. The first time it crashed upside down I was surprised the it took off and just flew upside down, and I had not flipped it before crashing... Very cool! One thing I found is that at almost any altitude if I cut power and then put it back to full power the copter will fall to the ground and then take off. It will slow down but I never got it to fully recover before tapping the ground. I tried not to fly much higher than the top of the power poles - I'm guessing 30 ft? So it seems you have to be higher than that to be more than "one mistake" high. I should not discount making a mistake in trying to recover. I am a still learning! With a small an maneuverable copter like the U27 capable of going well above trees and houses it can be easy to lose when it goes out of range. That happened to me twice. Both times it was much farther away than I expected. Both times it was found because even with a nearly drained battery the LEDs burn bright for hours! This is how I learned the controller range is about 80ft: FYI.For any beginner having a durable aircraft is important. I'm impressed with the beating the U27 has taken at my hand and it just keeps flying, battle scars and all. I have not even had to replace a blade! I am not a timid learner and I like to push the envelope. The U27 has withstood everything I've "thrown it at" if you know what I mean. Between being very light and sturdy this tiny toughie does very well.A very thoughtful inclusion is an extra battery. I seem to get about 5 to 8 minutes of air time from a battery. There is enough concentration involved when learning how to fly those few minutes seemed to last a long time. Less so now that I've gotten better at flying. The batteries charge in about 40 minutes or so on my USB fast charger.I'm already thinking I as I become proficient with the U27 I should move to a HD camera quadcopter before. Larger copters might have a bit longer flight time and make some very cool video footage! My conclusions are as follows:+ The package is complete except for 4 common AAA batteries; all you need to start is in there.+ The U27 remote control has controls that are simple enough for a beginner like me and provides capabilities for advanced use and presets for novice, intermediate and expert use.+ The U27 copter is one tough little aircraft that can really take a beating!+ The LED's can really help finding a lost U27 stay bright for a long time (thank heaven!).+++ The UDI U27 is way more fun that I was expecting!
