You know “how to” get healthy… but now there’s finally a book to help you find your “want to”- the lasting emotional and spiritual motivation to meet your goals and stay healthy.

The reality is we were made to crave. Craving isn’t a bad thing. But we must realize God created us to crave more of him. Life Changer!!
This book has completely changed my life. Using biblical truths and biblical tactics, you can absolutely change your life. I got this book in October 2017 and tried to read it, but my heart wasn’t ready to make my food addiction a spiritual journey and I quit reading it. Then in January of 2018, I decided I was ready and I vowed to stick with this book and let me just tell you, I do not regret it. Along with my gym appointments, my healthy eating has paid off in a big way- 60 pounds down so far. I haven’t been this weight since 2009, so I am very happy with my progress. Please get this book. It will change your life when you’re ready for it to!

Wow, just wow. This book is something special. Just know that this review will not do this book justice.

When I read self-help books (I categorize anything that makes me work on myself to grow and become a better me as self-help), I'm always faced with whether or not I'm going to put the things I read and learn about into practice in my life. And I've found that working on myself is not easy. I've been on this earth for 26 years and I've developed quite a lot of habits in that time. Habits as we all know can be extremely difficult to break. And while I've been on a journey to a healthier me that has had highs and lows since 2007, I've made progress, lost weight, gotten to a place where all of my numbers (blood sugar, cholesterol, iron, etc) looked great, then gained the weight back plus some, then started the process all over again. I'm not to my goal yet, but this process is never quick, and it's never easy. And food habits that have been developing for several years have been the major cause of me not reaching reaching my goal.

But this book, Made to Crave, was a real eye opener for me. In all of the years of my journey, I've never handed this problem over to God. I've prayed about it (some), but I've never taken it to the level that Lysa TerKeurst takes it to in this book. Many people avoid anything to do with religion and God these days, but she points out that studies show that willpower alone is not enough to win this battle. And some people will read this book and feel like she's taken this idea of handing our addictions to food over to God too far. But for me, that's just not possible.

When I first started Made to Crave, I was in a place where my "want to" had taken a leave of absence. After 10 months of exercising at least 5 days a week consistently and seeing little to no results, I found myself in a place where I just didn't want to try anymore. But my problem with this journey has always been food. I've always been willing to work out as much as necessary, but I want to eat whatever I want. Most experts that I've read (Chalene Johnson, Jillian Michaels, etc) will tell you than 80% of weight loss comes from healthy food choices and 20% comes from exercise. Despite intellectually knowing this fact, I still pursue the foods that I crave and hope to work them all off with exercise.

But as I said before, Lysa TerKeurst takes this food thing to a whole new level--a spiritual level. She gave me hope that my "want to" can be fixed again, but I'll need some help on my journey. This is one of those books that has so much in it that I know I'm going to have to give it a re-read--possibly several re-reads. I cannot even begin to express to you how much this book has changed my thinking on food and the way I approach food.

If you struggle with healthy food choices and you need help on your journey to a healthier you, I highly recommend this read to you. Be forewarned, this book focuses on your spiritual relationship with God as a means to conquering your food addictions. This is a spiritually journey just as much as, if not more than, a physical one. Lysa TerKeurst brought a whole new way of thinking to light for me that I will never be able to forget. Now that I know how much my relationship with food reflects my relationship with my Abba Father, I can't continue to live life ignorant of this. Made to Crave is not going to be the book for everyone, but it's definitely one for me.

This author really spoke to my heart. She has the same struggles I have and is in the same place spiritually as I am. Through this book, I am looking at overeating differently and I feel I'm making progress (if not physically yet, then emotionally and spiritually). I've read it twice: first time I just read through it and was enthralled. Second time, I read slowly and really asked myself the reflection questions and studied my answers. It was recommended to me by a friend who used it, now I'm recommending it to you.

She really enjoyed this book. Really makes you think on health choices and how God helps us through eating problems.
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022
When Lysa TerKeurst decided to get serious about losing weight and keeping it off, she consulted a nutritionist, was given a food plan, had weekly weigh-ins for accountability, and learned a lot about food choices and portions, but all of that is not what her book, Made to Crave, is really about. TerKeurst uses the weight loss challenge as an opportunity to reexamine her relationship with God; what she learned can be applied to other addictions as well. In her introduction she says, “God made us capable of craving so we’d have an unquenchable desire for more of Him, and Him alone. Nothing changes until we make the choice to redirect our misguided cravings to the only one capable of satisfying them. Getting healthy isn’t just about losing weight. It’s not limited to adjusting our diet and hoping for good physical results. It’s about recalibrating our souls so that we want to change—spiritually, physically, and mentally.”

This book is not going to be right for everyone as it tells of TerKeurst’s personal journey. She addresses the problems she confronts like stress eating, being comfortable with your body regardless of your size, and overindulgence. She ties her thoughts into appropriate Scripture references and includes sections at the end that collate the verses into one area according to subject. She also has “Healthy Eating Go-To Scripts” that are self-talk and Scriptures you can use to encourage yourself to stay the course. Each chapter ends with Personal Reflections that reiterate TerKeurst’s theme in that chapter and has questions for thought.

Is this the right book for you? That is a question only you can answer for yourself. As anyone who has ever tried to break the pattern of yo-yo dieting knows, it is not an easy or simple task. I would suggest that it would be one more tool in a Christian’s toolbox when trying to address the complex problem of losing weight. It is not an eating plan or a book that will “fix” your problem. To really work through this process requires soul-searching and hard work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring and challenging book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2019
I’ve found this book so inspirational and challenging. I’ve only really considered the spiritual aspect of being overweight in the past year and in that time I’ve struggled with understanding the balance between enjoying God’s good gift of food and gluttony and how to practically do something in God’s strength. This book has really helped me think through these issues. There are really really helpful Biblical principles discussed relating to our food and exercise choices. It is liberating to know that God cares about my weight, it is not a matter of conceit to want to be healthy. I found it very enjoyable to read, I like the way Lysa takes you on her journey, sharing the verses that have challenged and inspired her. She has a very strict diet as that is what she’s found necessary for her but she makes it clear that it is up to each of us to find the healthy eating plan that works for us. What she helps with is finding the inspiration and strength to stick with it. I’ve lost weight many times only to put it back on again. I’m starting this journey again but this time am hopeful I can keep it off as my target is a closer relationship with my Lord and saviour through practicing self control and stamping out gluttony and idolatry in my life. The weight loss will be a bonus!
