Easy setup, low-cost, easy to reboot, great except... Motorola is leaving this product market!
Be aware that Xfinity will not give you real support for it, since it’s not theirs. Worse, Motorola is getting out of the consumer modem business -- they left it, actually. So, caveat emptor (buyer beware)! Look elsewhere! I am very, very annoyed by that. I am going to be buying another modem soon -- I've had products that were abandoned by their produced, and what little support I got has always sucked: Kensington, Lexmark, and others. Shame on me for not looking into it before I bought this item. But here is my review, for those who are willing to buy what will be a porly supported product. This was written upon setting it up and spending some time using it, before I learned of Motorola's abandoning the consumer market for modems:I liked the price and maximum speed, since I’m not a gamer, I was happy with the 500+ Mbps max. It’s a smaller package than my old modem, with a better design, and set up was easy – connected right up to my Linksys router. We’ve been using it for more than 6 months now, with our cable internet provider (Xfinity) it works just fine. Our old one became a problem, and that was constant need to reboot it and the router (sometimes the connection failed more than once a day, even didn’t work for a period of time, and there were no outages.).We did have a week where almost every day the Motorola modem required a modem/router reboot, and a few day it was needed several times. Don’t know what that was about. It was concerning, as connection problems were the issue with our old modem, a ripoff from Linksys since they no longer even make consumer modems. (No updates available, if I recall.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Heat and Power Measurements
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2016
This review is being written the same day I got the modem, so don't rely on it for long term impressions. The setup process went fine and the modem works correctly. I'm getting the speeds that I pay for, same as what I had previously. I purchased the modem because my provider is in the process of upgrading their network, and when the upgrades are complete I'll need a 16 channel modem to remain on my current plan with the new speeds they'll offer. I wanted to write this review to provide some useful data for anyone else considering this model, because it's something I wish I could have found documented for newer modems before I purchased it.

First is the heat produced by the device. I've attached a photo taken with a thermal camera, showing the modem after being in use for 2 hours. It reads 111 degrees Fahrenheit at the hottest point. (Approx. 44 degrees Celcius) This means that the modem is warm to the touch, but not hot.

I also measured the idle power consumption of the modem using a kill-a-watt device. This is with the modem connected to the network and some devices connected via a router having some connections open, but no active downloads or streaming occurring. Idle power consumption averaged at 7.7 Watts.

I like the modem itself, although I'm not sure at this point if I'm going to keep it. Compared to my previous modem, (SB6141) both the power consumption (5.9W vs 7.7W) and heat output (98F vs 111F) are higher. On the plus side, it offers twice as many channels and twice the maximum speed. Considering the performance bump, the difference between the two devices likely means the MB7420 is actually better from a performance per watt perspective. If you need the kind of speed this modem is capable of, it seems like a very good option.
