Love Unexpected: A Regency Romance (The Saunders Family Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition
When the widowed Lady Marianne Deveridge is invited to spend the season in London with her friend Lady Penelope Wellingham, she has no idea that Penny and Beau have another guest: Captain Ernest Saunders, Beau’s brother. Matchmaking is definitely afoot. However, after having been married to wandering explorer, Marianne has no intention of becoming involved with a wandering sea captain.
Her first sight of Captain Saunders in all his robust masculinity brings every one of her senses to attention. She knows then that her resolve will be difficult to keep.
Almost immediately upon making the captain’s acquaintance, Marianne becomes the focus of a mysterious villain who is devising a horse racing fraud. What has she seen to endanger a deadly felon? She has no idea.
Captain Saunders makes it his business to keep Marianne safe, and the two of them are brought closer by their investigation into the dark side of horse racing. Still, she thinks she is managing to resist his charms.
It is not until her very survival is at stake that she realizes how interwoven their lives have become. Will her heart ever recover once she watches another ship put out to sea?

About the author

I realize that I am one of those rare people in the world who gets to live a life full of passion, suspense, angst, fulfillment, humor, and mystery. I am a writer. Every day when I sit down at my computer, I enter into a world of my own making. I am in the head of a panoply of characters ranging from a nineteen-year-old Austrian debutante (The Last Waltz) to a raging psychopath (The Arthurian Omen). Then there are the sassy heroines of my Regency romances and, of course, my Oxford Sleuths—Catherine and Harry.
How did this come about? I think I was wired to be a writer when I was born. There were a lot of things about my surroundings that I couldn’t control during my growing-up years, so I retreated to whatever alternate existence I was creating. The habit stuck, and now my family finds themselves living in my current reality during dinnertime as I overflow with enthusiasm about Wales, Austria, Italy, Regency England, Oxford, or World War II. Then there’s always Bosnia.
Formerly a traditionally published, award-winning author, I went Indie in 2012. In that time I have become an Amazon #1 best-selling author of Regency romances and Historical Mysteries. I enjoy genre-hopping, having published a genealogical mystery series, a Golden Age mystery series, two women’s fiction novels, a Historical Epic, three romantic suspense novels, thirteen Regency romances, some novellas, and a couple of non-fiction offerings.
With a BA from Stanford and an MA from George Washington University in International Relations (emphasis: Interwar Europe), I somehow stumbled into finance. But, once my husband was through law school, I never wanted to do anything but write and raise kids. Now the kids are gone, but (even better) seven grandchildren provide my rewards for finishing a manuscript.
Aside from the grandchildren, my favorite things include Florence, Italy; snowstorms; the Chicago Cubs; Oreos; real hot chocolate; Sundance Resort; lilacs; and dachshunds.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2020A wonderfully romantic story. I love Ms Vandagriff’s writing style. Her characters are well developed so that the reader could easily relate. Each personality is different and well rounded. I fell in love with the captain. He is very charismatic outgoing and focused. Paid loving attention to the children. And in the end was willing to compromise with his future. Marianne had very definite hopes and dreams. And the captain would do anything to help her fulfill those dreams. I loved watching these two characters gradually fall in love. It made me want a captain of my own. I can easily recommend this book to anyone looking for a great historical romance to get lost in.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2018I greatly enjoyed this story. I was a little confused by familiar characters at first, because we visit with those from "Three Gentlemen of London", but this is its own story. The h and H are bumped together by well-meaning friends. Sparks fly, but they want different things. Throw in some horsey business with a little mystery, and it's delightful how they resolve their differences and celebrate their common interests.
