Whispers in the Dark Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Karen teaches post-apocalypse preschool; she can handle anything. She never expected to be alone outside the wall, though, let alone find herself teaming up with one of the Mindless. And falling in love with him? No way.

Leo is a victim of the Mindless plague – physically alive but mentally dormant, acting on instinct. Karen sparks something within him, awakens him, and he realizes he’ll do anything to protect her. In the process he earns her trust and affection, but love? It’s more than he dares dream of.

Dr. Borsa runs a private camp for researching the Mindless; he’s delighted to have Leo as a test subject. His private militia are delighted to have Karen as a reluctant guest. Getting out of there alive and sane could be tricky.

There’s a divine plan to use them to heal the world, but God does no more than whisper in the dark; the rest is up to them. Can Leo become normal again? Will Karen realize how much he means to her before it’s too late? Can Borsa be stopped before he ruins everything?

Together, Karen and Leo could be the cure the world has been looking for. If they live long enough to figure that out.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book has a little bit of a lot of things - romance, adventure, fun, danger, a touch of the paranormal, and a hint of the inspirational - but it has nothing gory. It's not that kind of zombie book. This is a stand-alone, full-length novel with a "happily ever after" ending. No cliffhanger, no items left unresolved for sequels.  I want you to enjoy this experience and escape from real life for a while.
If you enjoyed the movie Warm Bodies, you should definitely try this book.
Thanks are due to my critique group, the Carolina Pantsers, as well as to the local #NaNoWriMo community (this was not one of my NaNo novels, I hasten to assure you. I started work on this in January 2015 and have written other things for NaNo.) because they're awesome, and having local authors to meet with on a regular basis is so very beneficial.  Also, a lot of fun.Through them, I found out about the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference. Without the connections I made there, I'd still be clueless and unpublished. Also, it was a lot of fun!My husband is a saint.  He's still here and my kids are still alive, so I call that a win.

From the Inside Flap

(This is a look inside the beginning of Chapter Six.) (There are 32 chapters total) There was, indeed, a holding pen of sorts, containing seven or eight of the Mindless. Karen shivered in remembered fear. They surged towards the near side of the pen, one of them right up against the door that was - she hoped - securely locked. Eyes vacant, faces blank, trying to walk through the bars. They didn't seem to know there were any. The hallway was filled with their grunts and groans as they kept pressing up against the bars, reaching out towards her. She took a deep breath, releasing it in a slow quavery stream. They're contained. They can't hurt me. It's okay. The cage protruded into the room by a foot or two, but seemed to be at least six feet deep. She frowned as she realized that behind the Mindless, she could see the outdoors, dimly lit by the overhead lights; the pen had apparently been built into the wall. It was hard to tell, but it had to be sticking out on both sides. Probably more so on the far side. No wonder the air had been feeling cooler. "You'd said that one of the monsters had captured you," Borsa commented casually. "I'd rather like to study it. Which one was it?" Same one that talked to me - but you said I was imagining that, so gosh, maybe I hallucinated the whole thing. "I'm not certain," she said, softly. "Perhaps you could remember the clothing it was wearing? That's often a useful way to identify them." Off to the side, she saw a familiar sweatshirt, and glanced that way. Sweatshirt boy was standing a little apart from the others, looking right at her. Really seeing her. She felt... she didn't know, but it wasn't fear. She cocked her head, regarding him. He was different. Obviously. "Um, yeah. Let me think." "They get agitated when people are here," Dr. Borsa said, slipping past her, moving all the way into the lab. She followed, cautiously. The opening was wide enough to allow them to stay well back from the outthrust arms. Borsa stopped a good three feet from the monsters at the bars. She moved further away from the cage, and he turned to face her. "We don't always have any of them in here. It's my own design for a holding pen. The specimens are loaded in through the door on the far side, so I don't have sweaty soldiers in here contaminating my lab. Then when I need to pull one for an experiment, there's another door on this side." "The doors are locked, right?" She watched over his shoulder in fascination as the grunting and groaning and flailing around began to diminish. "Oh, of course," Borsa said. "Not that it takes more than basic child-proofing, really." "Seems efficient, having a pass-through cage," she commented, semi-randomly. The Mindless appeared to be losing interest in the good doctor. Karen decided she totally sympathized with them there. They were milling around now, no longer trying to walk through steel bars. Sweatshirt boy was still in the same place, though, looking at her. His face scrunched in what almost looked like concern. She glanced back at the doctor, who was pointing out other features of his lab, oblivious to her distraction. "This is actually a two-part lab. This is my general work area, but there's another, more sterile space." He indicated the far wall, and Karen realized that it only spanned about half the room. No doors, though, so 'more sterile' really could not be much better. "Over here, we have a gas chromatograph." He strode towards the half wall and the entrance to the second lab, naming various pieces of equipment. For a moment, she hung back, and drifted a little closer to the cage. Curious. Sweatshirt boy was still watching her. "You... okay?" His voice was very soft, but still, she didn't want the doctor noticing. She gave him a discreet thumbs-up, then waved a dismissive hand at him, frowning a little and pointing towards Borsa. Sweatshirt boy looked where she pointed, then met her eyes again and nodded very slightly. He turned away, all expression draining back out of his face. "You mustn't get too close," Borsa said, walking back across the lab floor. She turned more fully towards the cage. "I'm not." They all looked the same, now. "Just trying to figure out which one it was that captured me. It was such a traumatic experience, I don't remember much. I'm not even sure it's here."

Pam Jernigan has spent thirty years writing and sharing weird fiction, and learning a lot along the way. After winning #NaNoWriMo for the second year, she decided to try writing a good book for a change. Outlining it took a day, writing the first draft took a month and a half, and getting it ready for publication took two more years. Soon after the first draft was finished (and not knowing any better) she submitted it to a writing contest. Her goal was merely to get some professional feedback, so she was astonished to hear she'd won.

She lives in North Carolina with a husband, two almost-grown children, and two cats. She's an accountant in her day job, volunteers with children's ministries in her church, and loves partying at libraries.

Isaac Asimov was an early favorite, followed by Anne McCaffrey and Lois McMaster Bujold. She likes romance and humor with her fantastical stories, and has a soft spot for heroes with superpowers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Zombie Apocalypse stories are not generally my thing, but this is so well-written, so well-balanced between the "Mindless" and and those who are still normal, that I was completely drawn in. Ms Jernigan has a deft hand with both the romance and the violence, and lightens the heaviest moments with just the right comedic touch. (A character thought she was going to die and kept waiting for life to flash before her eyes. "Okay, life, time to start flashing.") I would recommend this book to anyone.

I’ve not been a fan of zombies, but the zombies I found in this story aren’t what I expected. I also found some sci-fi, some adventure and, of course, romance. And tying it all together is a message about faith and self-sacrificial love. The story kept me engaged and I’m going to miss the characters now that it’s over...
I would recommend this book to high-school age youth and young adults.

A well-written, fast-paced journey through a post-apocalyptic world with a twist. Admittedly, I've never been into the zombie thing, but that didn't detract from enjoying this book. The main characters are engaging, the plot is unique, and the writing is clever. I look forward to more titles from this author.

Usually Christian fiction is a hard sell for me but the premise of this book was far too interesting for me to pass up. I wasn't disappointed! Karen is a lovable heroine, and for the most part all characters are well fleshed out. The world building is well done and the wry humor is spot on. I had a couple of issues with the pacing, but overall this book was a fresh and a delightful read. For these reasons I gave the book four stars.

What I liked most about this book was the new take on zombies. The Mindless, while acting lifeless are actually feeding off people's energy instead of their flesh. They kill not to eat humans, but so that they can experience the intense fear people feel before death. Once dead, the dead are left alone. For people who aren't a huge fan of gore, this is great. The Mindless are well explained throughout the book. The more we discover about the Mindless the more we discover about the world Karen and her friends live in.

Speaking of Karen...even in the darkest of times people still love and find humor in things. Karen was the epitome of this. Her humor was fantastic and lead to some of my favorite interactions with Leo (as well as other characters). She needs to be saved true, but she does the saving just as frequently. To see her organic growth was delightful. Leo was surprisingly well fleshed out and honestly I can't decide if I loved him or Karen more. Each character was well defined even if we didn't see them frequently. There were a few characters I felt could use some more attention but I'm willing to forgive that thanks to Karen and Leo's relationship. There's a lovely Beauty and the Beast vibe within that relationship too. This was a really neat and fun touch.

With all that being said, I did have a slight problem with the pacing. For the most part it was spot on, but at times things felt a little too repetitive. Karen has to come to terms with a lot of things, and frequently we see her struggling with these issues over and over again. Eventually it leads to some fantastic character development, but I felt the repetition slowed the book down somewhat.

I also felt that the Christian themes were overstated in parts. For new Christians this is a wonderful book, exploring the ups and downs of faith. For long term Christians or non-believers parts can feel more like a conversion attempt than a way to build faith and can sometimes distract from the plot.

Even so, I really did enjoy this book. It was a quick read simply because it was so fun to read. The world building, interesting characters, and great concept make this a fun and fresh read.

TL;DR: Even if you aren't a huge fan of Christian fiction or dystopian books, you really should give this book a shot. With a focus on all kinds of love, a heroine who can save herself and others, as well as a really interesting concept, this book is a fun and clean read.
