Product Description

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Q: Will the SMARTmini AUX work with my car / phone?
    • The SMARTmini AUX works with any car stereo that has a 3.5mm AUX input port (if you've connected your phone to your car using a 3.5mm AUX cord, then the SMARTmini AUX Bluetooth adapter should work in your car). The second requirement involves your phone having Bluetooth connectivity (if you've ever paired your phone to a wireless speaker, it should be compatible).
  • Q: Can I pair more than one phone to the SMARTmini AUX at the same time?
    • The SMARTmini AUX is designed to work with only one paired smartphone or MP3 player at a time. You can initiate a new pairing with additional devices, but it will "forget" and replace the previously paired device.
  • Q: Can the SMARTmini AUX handle phone calls?
    • Yep! The SMARTmini AUX has a built-in HD microphone for your voice, and it plays your call's audio through your car speakers. It upgrades older cars to hands-free calling. The SMARTmini AUX does not have a speaker itself, so it plays audio from your paired phone (e.g. calls, music, GPS navigation) through your car's speakers.
  • Q: Can I leave the SMARTmini AUX connected to my car at all times?
    • Absolutely! We even include an optional dashboard mount in case you prefer a more permanent installation. Make sure you connect the included USB power cable to keep the SMARTmini AUX charged and ready for use. If you cannot leave the USB power cable plugged in, just remember to recharge the adapter.

What more could you ask for! I previously had a GOgroove FlexSMART X2 ADVANCED Wireless In-Car Bluetooth FM Transmitter with Charging, Music Control and Hands-Free Calling for ANDROID, iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Smartphones in my 1996 Honda Civic, and it fit PERFECTLY and worked PERFECTLY. However, in my 2013 Honda Fit, it (if you'll excuse the pun) didn't fit well. Also, I now have an auxiliary jack, and although the FlexSMART X2 has an Aux. Out, I thought it was a waste to use the device with an FM transmitter when I don't need it.I ordered this in the hopes that it would be as good quality as the FlexSMART X2, except more compact and with a better microphone location, and boy is that true!I haven't placed any calls with it yet, but by pressing the button on the unit I was able to get Siri to take make a reminder by speaking in a normal voice, so I have to believe it will work just fine for that.Honestly, my mileage always seems to vary with call quality over AT&T's network anyway, so I'm not sure I could chalk up good/bad call quality to a particular device or their shoddy network, but that's another review...As far as the SMARTmini AUX goes, the music quality is excellent, the sound level is very well matched to the FM/AM radio (which may more be a function of the Fit's audio system anyway), and the unit is the perfect size and form factor to fit in with the design of the head unit and interior of the car.The flashing light is awfully annoying, so I took a piece of electrical tape and covered 95% of it up so I can still see it for status (quick blue flash for paired, red for charging and off, and quick blue/red flash for pairing).

I'm a techie and a budget audiophile and I find this thing great depending on how you're using it. If you're looking for a permanent home setup, this is not the product for you and should probably look into the Logitech wireless bluetooth adapter but if you're looking to hop around parties or plug it into friend's cars, this is definitely a good option.

There's no other product in the market like this. It's a niche solution and it does it's job well. I currently have a custom bluetooth setup in my car going into my stereo. I was originally going to buy a visor speakerphone but they're costly and ideally I wanted it to go through my car's speakers. Because of the built in mic and an aux out, it was exactly what I was looking for.

This little unit uses 2.1+EDR and uses both HSP("call audio" for calls) and A2DP("media audio" for music/nav). On my android phone's BT profile setting for the GoGroove I can enable/disable either HSP or A2DP which is an important feature for me.

My custom bluetooth solution is a bluetooth 30-pin(ipod) receiver using A2DP connected to a belkin tunecast aux(? it was an older discontinued item, I don't remember) preamp with aux hardwired to the fuse box connected to my sony HU through a ground loop isolating cable. For HU's that don't have built in bluetooth, I found this setup to give the best SQ. Un-amped most units seem to be underpowered and this little unit is no different. I'd say it produces about 90% of the output but the sound quality is slightly worse. To match my amped setup, I need to increase my volume setting by 2 which I think is equivalent to a 4dB increase. Although, I am not getting any EMI whine like some people complain about, the lows sounds slightly muddy and the highs slightly tinny. TBH it's more than bearable. I'm running all aftermarket speakers (dedicated sony tweeters, pioneer mids, and 2-12" infinity perfect subs) and I don't think the normal person would be able to tell the difference in sound. But since I want the highest quality sound I can squeeze out of the system, I opted to go a different route.

The features of this unit allow for a very unique solution. Since android will let you connect to one HSP and one A2DP receiver simultaneously, the GoGroove was perfect. I connect to my custom bluetooth setup for music/nav through A2DP (enable "media audio" / disable "call audio" in the BT profile setting) and connect to the GoGroove using HSP(enable "call audio" / disable "media audio" in the BT profile setting). Since my aux-in port is on the face of my HU, I'm using a 3.5mm splitter to plug both the GoGroove and my custom solution in. This however does have its own problems. I've noticed some signal interference while using the splitter to play music with the GoGroove idle. I think I'm getting some destructive interference resulting in the sound "wobbling". I'm not entirely sure how to fix the situation. For now I have the GoGroove plugged into another cable going to the rear RCA inputs (CD2 input). When connected to the AUX INPUT playing music, the phone's ringtone will play over A2DP at which point I switch to the CD2 INPUT to answer the call.

The mic pickup is awesome. I tested it calling my girlfriend from the highway. She kept telling me to stop shouting. I fell victim to naturally speaking louder because the mic was so far away. So I began to speak normally and she could hear me fine. When I opened the windows at 75mph she could still hear me but also the wind in the background. The noise-cancellation with the windows closed works very well. The navigation was playing through the car speakers while I was talking and she was unable to hear it at all.

On a side note, if you're using this unit on an android, you can turn down just the main volume and leave the call volume at max so you'll still be able to have your conversation at normal volume and hear the nav prompts softly during your call. Otherwise the nav prompts will be glaringly loud and have to pause your conversation.

The unit seems to go into a stand-by mode after a short delay. This means if no signal is going through the unit such as music or a call, the first half second of a navigation prompt will be cut off. I.E. google nav will say "_n a quarter mile, turn left" cutting out the 'I'. But if you have music playing or are on a call, the whole thing will be heard.

I had a lot of unanswered questions regarding this product before I bought it. Hopefully this review will help those of you with the same questions.

Understand that I am using this to turn my headphones into Bluetooth headphones, I am not normally using this in a car, but I did test it in the car.

The good: While I have many things to say about how this could be better, this is the best of the 4 such devices I have tested. The audio quality for streaming id quite good, and drive my Sennheiser headphones nicely. The call quality is also good. Light and not too large. It just sticks in the jack and swivels, mostly staying in place. I would think that this internal battery is not really necessary on this device, when used as intended in a car... but I know others would rather bring it in at night to change, rather than run a power cable in the car across the dash. I put this in the positive category because this device works well using the car power or battery. (note on using car power: Get a ground loop isolator to remove engine wine: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_1?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A10981591%2Ck%3Aground+loop+isolator&keywords=ground+loop+isolator&ie=UTF8&qid=1423677558&rnid=2941120011 )

The bad: This is a case of trying to simplify the design too much.
1- The one button to rule them all: To turn it on: press and hold the button. To activate your phones search (Siri, Google Now, or Cortana) press and hold the button. To turn it off, press and hold the button... oh, and never mind that it ALSO just activated the search on the phone. Why is a simple on/off switch so hard?
2- The one jack to rule them all: So... I dont know why you might need a line-in on one of these... but maybe... However, combining the line-in and the change port makes this reliant on a propitiatory change cable. Stop making propitiatory cables. Just stop it.

The ugly: Why is it it necessary to blow my ears out with the tones it generates when turning on, connecting, and turning off? I understand that I am using this in an application it was not designed for, yet when I tested this in my car, I have the same reaction.

    **** Edit
Now that I have owned this for a while, I have come to realize that this device has problems when connected to computers. I have tested this with both computers that I have easy access to: Both are Dell laptops. One is a e7240 running Windows 8.1 (Bluetooth card identifies as a Intel Bluetooth 4.0 + HS) and the other is a e6230 running Fedora 21. In both cases, having this device connected A2DP causes the computer to lock up for 10 to 20 seconds "bursts". Having it connected as Headset causes the wireless card to stop responding for the 10-20 second "bursts", kicking me out of meetings and Skype calls. At first I figured that my laptop had a bad card in it... but when it did the same thing on a Linux box? Nope. Nope. Nope.

I started to use this to listen to my phone on wired head phones that I basically converted to bluetooth with this thing. This was OK... for a while. After about 6 months, the thing overheated and melted the charging cable into the connector of the bluetooth. Im just glad it do not start a fire. It was too hot to touch!

This is a great accessory. You don't lose much sound quality and the mix works really well(this was an issue with my old adaptor).

The only negative thing is that it does produce a hiss out the speakers if the connected device isn't producing sound, but once music is playing or you're speaking on the phone the hiss goes away

5.0 out of 5 stars Juste parfait, un produit de qualité
Reviewed in France on April 11, 2014

This product has been on my car since months now and all I can say is this product is of top quality! There are only a few qualms for me about this product though.
I am using this with my Nexus 4 and sometimes there are pairing problems with Bluetooth and the device just doesn't connect to my phone.

Secondly, the connection drops and comes back randomly at times and this can get annoying!

I must say that the customer support for this product is excellent! I asked for a charging replacement cable as the original one broke and they shipped me one within no time for free!
