Belkin Conserve Insight - Energy Cost Monitor
From the Manufacturer
The Belkin Conserve Insight Energy Cost Monitor helps you measure the true impact of your energy use on your utility bill - and the environment. Find out how much energy your devices really use--including watts, the cost of operation, and the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions--with the Belkin Conserve Insight Energy Cost Monitor. At a glance you can see exactly how much electricity is used by devices like computers, televisions, kitchen appliances and more. The monitor also shows the carbon dioxide emissions produced as a byproduct of your electricity usage. With this monitor, you get a clear idea of the true impact to your wallet--and the environment.
Be Smart About Energy with the Cost Tracking FeatureThe Conserve Insight Energy Cost Monitor makes it easy to be smart about energy. With the help of this handy device, you can see how much your devices cost to use on a yearly or monthly basis so you can make better energy decisions. Additionally, because the Conserve Insight also shows power plant carbon dioxide emissions produced to use various devices on a yearly or monthly basis, you'll discover your true environmental impact. The convenient tracking feature tracks your usage of a device over time and projects how much that device costs you to operate based on your actual usage.
Monitor is Customizable, Easy-to-Read
The Conserve Insight is both customizable and easy to read. A six-foot cord allows you to read the display at eye-level or place it on a table. And for added convenience, you can choose to use either the preloaded U.S. average electricity rate or enter your own rate off your electric bill. You can also set the carbon dioxide emissions rate for your specific region.
This unit includes a convenient tracking feature which gathers data over time to provide accurate energy use information based on your actual usage.
Smart, User-Friendly Design
Designed for ease of use, the Conserve Insight sets up in minutes. Simply plug it into a standard outlet and then plug a device in to the unit. The screen will automatically display how many dollars per year your device costs in its current operating mode--no need to press a button. Easy-to-understand graphic icons make it easy to read results, while both instantaneous and tracking modes of usage calculation let you put things in perspective.
With your device plugged into the Conserve Insight, you can press one of the corresponding buttons to enter into the desired mode. For a range of readings, pressing the CO2 or dollar button more than once will switch between monthly and yearly readings.
The Conserve Insight Energy Use Monitor is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

I have never thought of measuring how much energy each appliance were using till about a few months back. We used a controllable thermostat which is partly monitored by the utility company themselves and hence they do regulate the cooling on certain pre-agreed upon time-bands to prevent wastage, and this I thought was enough to save some money. But an electricity bill a couple of months back did wake me up. Started paying close attention to this once I noticed a trend in my electricity bill and how during certain months it went up when I have thought we did use less. That pinch did wake me from my unconscious slumber as to what was costing me a lot to run, and prompted me to take some action.
So I bought a P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor because I read some great things about it on another site. This did work well except for the fact that it was a pain in the rear to read and see. So I had 2 options - return that product and pick up something easier to use or pick up an extension cord (spend more money) and hook it up using that. Needless to say I decided to go with the first option when I found this Belkin product and it is possibly the best decision I made.
Unlike the Kill-a-Watt this monitor comes with pre-attached 6 foot extension cord and is much easier to read, setup and use on a daily basis. I for one love that this also tells me the CO2 emissions, some of you might not care for this but it is a great feature to have according to me. The averaging feature is another great option - What is the averaging feature? Well it averages your consumption based on your usage of the appliance/gadget over the time you have left the monitor plugged in. I used a 2 week time period for most of my 24/7 stuff (desktop/HTPC/Media console etc) and 2 month period for most of my stuff which is used as needed (read washer/dryer/dishwasher etc). So the more time you leave the monitor plugged in and use your stuff as you normally do, the better the average predictions would be, very cool. Saves me having to monitor the monitor and then calculating an average myself.
The setup and operation is too easy to explain, just have to understand that there are only three buttons, single press of each would work as a toggle switch for the display, yearly vs monthly, and a long press of the same would allow you to configure the monitor and enter your own per KWH rates and CO2 emission rates.
The only feature I think it missed in building in for whatever reason was a built in memory to store readings, and read them even after the monitor is unplugged. The averaging feature kind of eliminates this need to an extent if you have the patience to leave it plugged in for a few weeks or months, averaging plus writing down some readings is all you need. But sometimes a memory reading is absolutely necessary, for instance if you are tinkering with your electronics like I do all the time and I replaced a component in my desktop and would like a before and after comparison. Maybe they will incorporate this in the next version.
So there it is very straight forward, user friendly (my wife who hates messing with electronics loves this and uses this regularly) and accurate monitor to tell you about your energy usages. I love the simple fact that Belkin paid attention to what the consumers wanted and designed a product which addresses a lot of issues that other monitors have always had and came out with a great product.
Finally a summary of pros and cons:
Pros - 6 foot pre attached cord, averaging feature, easy to read display, simple elegant design, and accurate measurement. Also the price is definitely attractive when you compare it to a similar product.
Cons - no built in memory for the device to store and compare readings after unplugging the device.
Like to have - maybe a color display, a graphical view (usage graphs) for those of use who are visual even while reading numbers and definitely a programmable memory.
So there it is I like it and would recommend this to anyone considering buying a monitor.
If you leave it plugged in, it displays the average projected usage. For instance, I was curious whether it was more cost effective to leave my electric hot water boiler (for tea) plugged in all the time or unplugged. When boiling water, it consumed about 800W of power for about 5 minutes. The rest of the time, it consumes about 80W. When I unplug the water heater, it continues to average the device's power usage so that at the end of the day I had a pretty good average of power usage for a month.
I bought this with the hope that I could easily find the devices in the house where I had phantom energy usage. It worked great for this. I was happy to find that some items I suspected were using energy while turned off were in fact using energy but even better, I dispelled some beliefs I had about others. I saw a commercial that phone chargers use energy even while not charging a phone if they were still plugged into the wall. To my surprise, they were sucking 0 watts when plugged in but not charging. Now I keep them plugged in all the time (much to the satisfaction of my fiance that got frustrated when I would unplug them).
The one con, that I note below, is that I really don't have much of a use for it after I did the initial analysis of my house. I know what everything uses now and I don't need to use it much anymore. I know the energy analysis will eventually help save me the 20 bucks I paid for it, but that could take a year or more.
Pros:
- Accurately tells you both cost per month or year and instant watt usage.
- If plugged in for more than 30 minutes or so, it will determine the average the usage from then on out for per month and per year costs. Very helpful for a surge protector that provides electricity for a number of devices that aren't always on at the same time. Averaging works great with the Belkin Conserve Switch F7C01110q AV Energy-Saving AV Surge with Remote when you are turning the power on and off a few times per day.
- Can adjust cost per kWh depending on what you pay for your state/region etc. Sadly, I had to estimate it because it doesn't out right say it on my electricity bill.
Cons:
- Almost single use item - My only complaint would be that after I did the initial analysis of all the devices in the house, I really don't have much of a use for it anymore or until we buy a new appliance or something. Its great for piece of mind but if it wasn't on a lightning deal for $20, I probably wouldn't have bought it. I'm not sure my piece of mind is worth much more than that.
I don't know that it will save you money outright by using this device, but it definitely helped me understand the places that were using a lot of energy and helped me change my behaviors and habits to save money. So it will save me money in the long term.
I would recommend for energy-savers like myself.
Top reviews from other countries
It has been very easy to use, although as other reviewers have noted, there are no options for different time-of-day electricity pricing. For this though, I used a time-weighted average for the day and I measure the power usage over a week, so it should be reasonably accurate. I also like having the tethered meter, saving my knees.
I am not sure how relative the "carbon dioxide emissions" feature is since we live in an area where most of the power is generated by carbon neutral generators (i.e. hydroelectric).
And for those that pulled on the wire and broke it, they should know better. The products not defective or poorly engineered.
