Managing for Happiness offers a complete set of practices for more effective management that makes work fun. Work and fun are not polar opposites; they're two sides of the same coin, and making the workplace a pleasant place to be keeps employees motivated and keeps customers coming back for more. It's not about gimmicks or 'perks' that disrupt productivity; it's about finding the passion that drives your business, and making it contagious. This book provides tools, games, and practices that put joy into work, with practical, real-world guidance for empowering workers and delighting customers. These aren't break time exploits or downtime amusements―they're real solutions for common management problems. Define roles and responsibilities, create meaningful team metrics, and replace performance appraisals with something more useful. An organization's culture rests on the back of management, and this book shows you how to create change for the better.

"Jurgen's book should be on every leader's bookshelf!" (Management Services, September 2016)
From the Inside Flap
Happy teams are more productive and managers should find joy at work, too!
"Jurgen's book is practical and fun, but most of all, it's subversive. If you care enough to get started, you'll discover that these tools will transform everything about your organization."
Seth Godin, The Icarus Deception
Fact: Happy organizations are more productive and more innovative.
Is there something I can do to foster a better company culture? More productivity from my team? More innovation from management? And more happiness for everyone?
Managing for Happiness offers concrete games, tools, and practices for all workers. It addresses many common leadership questions, such as:
- How can we measure performance?
- How can we reward people in a better way?
- How can we replace performance appraisals?
- How can we motivate our teams?
- How can we change the organization's culture?
In modern organizations, people are expected to be servant leaders and systems thinkers, but nobody explains exactly how to do this. About the author

Navigating AI Between Hype and Doom - author, speaker, entrepreneur
Jurgen Appelo is a radical synthesist, resolute unfixer, and unabashed rule-breaker. He not only brings together diverse perspectives in organization design and development—he tears them apart and rebuilds them for the Age of AI, without permission.
As an author, speaker, and entrepreneur, Jurgen helps leaders stop managing like it's 2001 and start rewiring their organizations for AI-driven leadership, autonomous digital agents, and algorithmic management. Through stories, games, tools, and practices, he shatters conventional thinking and gets his audience to experiment with human-AI teamwork, anti-fragile structures, and the unpredictable nature of customer and employee experience.
Jurgen Appelo is recognized as a Top 50 Leadership Expert, a Top 100 Leadership Speaker, and a Global Lean/Agile Thought Leader.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2016I should first admit that I was a reviewer for 2 of Jurgen's prior books #Workout and Management 3.0. I can honestly say I have enjoyed, and found very useful, all four of his books. While I did not have time to review this new book, I did keep up with chapters as they were being written. So now that this has been published, I can say this book, too, is very good.
Now Management 3.0 seems to me to have been Jurgen's "stake in the ground" for explaining complexity and how, as a leader/manager, to deal with complexity. But like all four of his books, there were useful, practical things to try out to help teams/groups of people become more successful.
Both this book and #Workout are filled with ideas for how to encourage better communication and collaboration between people. Some might call these "games." I like to think of them as teambuilding exercises which also produce results that can be used to grow people's knowledge and understanding. I think people working together and getting such results will be happy as they will feel more fulfilled in having gone through the exercises.
I'd encourage anyone interested in trying to improve/grow effective interaction between people to take a look at this book (and Jurgen's others).
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2016How do we make this required reading for everyone who works with other humans? Insightful, practical, and simple to put into action. The ideas in Appelo's new book will rock your culture, improve your results, and change the way your team works together.
As a keynote speak and consultant in the company culture space, I see organizations struggle all the time with how to align the team, drive results, and make work more meaningful. Outside of hiring me (if I do say so myself), they should all read and apply the methods that Appelo covers in this amazing book.
Not only will it change the way you approach management -- but it is fun and easy to devour every single page of this gorgeously illustrated book.
MUST HAVE!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2016I got the Kindle edition for cloud reader. This book is a 85% rehash of the author's previous book, workshop and talk. So if you like me hate reading words and blah blah then you can skip this book and go directly to the youtube talk. It is the same but different. Except the jokes. I think the jokes are funnier in this book than in the video.
=== Summary of the book (spoiler alert !!!) ===
The book starts with Melly Shum - a fictional character from Rotterdam - who hates her job, but she did not do anything about it. The motivation of the book is... "So do you want to be the next Melly Shum?" The thesis of the book is "Hate job = unhappy". The solution proposed is: "How to make a happy workplace" by (largely) improving communication techniques and changing the corporate power hierarchy so that things such as "credit of work", "merit reward" and "effort recognition" are assigned in a more rational (and fair) way. In other words, this is Tony Hsieh's ethos of "Happy Management" formula for process oriented managers who need the message delivered in small chunks, workshopable exercises and bright colors but not too bright. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2019Most of the books for managers provide a lot of theory and lack the concrete tools to improve the management practices. This book provides the very concrete tools that are easy to use and engage people into company development. I believe that every manager should have it, read it and use the games and tools in everyday life. Once applied less formal managers would be needed in the companies ;-).
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2016A great book for owners, leaders and managers of companies big and small. There are a ton of practical tips for helping your organization improve its' overall culture. Specifically, it helps with reward systems, communication, delegation, constructive feedback, scoreboard/metrics, compensation, etc., etc., etc. There are so many notes in my copy of the book because there are so many fantastic, actionable suggestions.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2016Management is everyone's responsibility. It's not just about the boss giving tasks to the team. It's about being creative, inspiring values to everyone around you, and bringing happiness into your workplace. Jurgen Appelo proposes the tools that help build better, happier teams, which will eventually reflect into quality work and customer satisfaction.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2022Good quality book
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2017Jurgen is an absolute inspirator and free thinker. I consider him to be one is the most agile and insightful coaches in this decade. Connecting guilds and long standing valuable working relationships with today's practice is an eye opener. So why only 4 stars (for now)? Because I lack his magnus opus, in which his advice becomes easily actionable and in which the dark side of trust, namely ego and selfish behaviour are factored into his model. But maybe Jurgen knows... Maybe he wants us to draw our conclusions.. That is fine, but any theory fits its own vision of the state of people and their relationships.
