Citric Acid is the perfect DIY cleaning solution
While lemons smell great and are often recommended for cleaning various surfaces around the house, the "magic" cleaning ingredient in lemons is citric acid. The citric acid helps break apart stains so they can be flushed away, provides a gentle bleaching action, and acts as a bactericide and fungicide.
You can use a Citric Acid cleaning solution to:
- Clean kitchen surfaces, clean and deodorize a microwave, clean windows and mirrors, sanitize wooden cutting boards and kitchen utensils, descale coffee pots and tea kettles, remove stains from plastic containers and dishes, remove toilet bowl stains, remove soap scum, and many more applications!
Why use Citric Acid for canning?
An essential ingredient in home canning, citric acid is used to maintain a safe pH level in the canning of fruit and vegetables. Although many fruits contain a certain level of acid, it is not nearly enough to kill all harmful bacteria. Citric acid will prevent the formation of bacteria and spores that can cause food poisoning and keep your fruit looking fresh by preventing the occurrence of brown spots.
How can Citric Acid improve your cooking and baking?
Citric acid can be used at home to enhance the flavor of a dish or baked good, while also balancing acidity. Because it comes in powder form, it’s easy to sprinkle a small amount into a dish. Citric acid can be added to your favorite lemon dinner recipe such as lemon pasta or ceviche. It’s also a great addition to tomato soup, compound butters, margaritas and more. It will add a kick of acidity to any dish or drink without adding liquid, making it a great replacement for vinegar or lemon juice.
Baking with citric acid is a great way to enhance the flavor of lime or lemon desserts. It can be stirred into lemon curd, mixed into a glaze or incorporated into a frosting. You can also incorporate citric acid into the batter of baked goods, but it’s important to remember that it will cause a chemical reaction with baking powder or baking soda, causing further leavening.
DIY Bath Bombs
Adding a bath bomb to your bath can make it a truly luxurious experience. The fizzing can add relaxing, exfoliating, moisturizing, cleansing or therapeutic elements and create a delightful sensory experience. You can make DIY homemade bath bombs with the help of Spicy World Citric Acid and a few other ingredients from your kitchen.
Citric Acid, when combined with bicarbonate of soda, creates the signature 'fizzing' associated with bath bombs.
There are dozens of bath bomb recipe found online, and there's no single recipe that is best for everyone. The combination of ingredients can depend not only on your personal preference, but also on your local climate. If you live in an area with higher humidity, you may need to adjust the ratio of ingredients in a bath bomb recipe. Your bath bomb's salts can absorb moisture from the air and prematurely fizz or prevent your bomb from drying and holding its shape.

Natural cleaning productCitric Acid is perfect for making natural cleaning products. It tackles soap scum and removes limescale, stains, and even rust. |
Laundry detergentCitric Acid is a common ingredient in laundry detergents. It works well as a fabric softener because it balances the PH of the laundry detergent. |
Stain removerGetting a stain on your favorite shirt is a huge disappointment. Citric Acid works similarly to bleach, by eliminating unsightly stains and odors. |

My favorite use for this is in the dishwasher. I add about 1 - 2 teaspoons just tossed straight in to the bottom of the dishwasher before I turn it on. The first wash after we did this the first time was so amazing! I couldn't believe how clean my dishes looked. After the first week of trying this out it was almost like we'd replaced all of our dishware. Years of buildup that had also caused other stains was gone. I drink big glasses of iced tea every day and my tumblers were starting to get a tea colored tint on the inside. Thanks to the hard water scale being removed, the stain that was attached to it disappeared too and all of my tumblers looked like I'd just bought them! My mom was so impressed by how clean our dishes looked that she bought a bag of citric acid and now tosses some in with every dishwasher load too!
It is SO quick and easy to use as a cleaner. It is activated with just hot water. I put hot water in a container, pour some citric acid in and either drop things into the container to soak, or hold the container under things so that they can be submerged like the faucet head in my bathrooms. Some spots need a little more creativity. I sprinkle granules around the handles of the faucets in the bathroom where drips from wet hands like to cause buildup over time and then drizzle tiny amounts of hot water over it. It works so quickly, usually within 3 - 5 minutes, then I use a sponge to try to rub it in to tough build up a bit and then rinse it all away, that's it! I put some in my hot kettle right after I've made my morning tea with a little extra hot water in the pot. It literally takes 30 seconds to remove all the scale from the bottom of the pot, and then it's clean as new. I do this every 2 - 4 weeks and today my 2 year old kettle still looks new which is a miracle with the hard water here.
I know that there are a lot of uses for citric acid, but I only use mine as a cleaner for hard water scale and i can't say enough good about it. It has been the miracle that my house needed when other options for removing scale have failed. It's cheap, easy to use, not a harsh chemical like so many other cleaning products, I so highly recommend this if you're struggling with hard water buildup!
The product arrived in a cellophane style bag. The bag was not the type that you could re-seal and store as is, so I immediately transferred to a longer term, hard sided container. Truth be told, I would have done this even if the bag could be re-sealed. Transferring consumable goods into fixed sized containers made my cupboard easier to organize and allowed me to tag goods with item name, purchase date and expiration date.
The citric acid I received looked just like the photos and matched the description provided. The weight delivered as also as advertised. The bag arrived in tact, with no tears or punctures. The product received was completely granular in make-up, with NO clumps or signs of humidity or water contamination. The product remained, throughout the self-life, granular and without signs of water contamination. I only poured or used dry scoops to remove product from the container, as to reduce introducing water or other dry materials into the citric acid. This seemed to work out as planned. When the citric acid was placed into a working area, and liquids were introduced, clumping would occur, but this was generally the plan in place (see my reference above to bath bombs). I wonder if those that experienced clumping had to do with the region the bags were shipped to/from or where the store house was located. I am in California, where weather and humidity are rather moderate year round. High temps and exposure to moisture apparently both lead to clumping.
The product received was not contaminated with any bugs or pests, and remained bug free throughout the self-life in my home. The hard sided container, that it was stored in, sealed completely, which I am sure helped keep the citric acid and our cupboards pest free.
This citric acid proved to be highly soluble in water, which made making my DIY products pretty easy going. The citric acid also dissolved quickly when introduced to foods (I used this to help keep fruit from browning when I had some parties to attend) and did not seem to alter the flavor or negatively impact the appearance of the food.
I've seen various listings for the shelf-life of citric acid. I still have some of this product remaining, and while I have not used it for food purposes for quite some time, it does still seem to have retained the integrity from when I first received it. I am only using it up in my DIY products for the home, and it is still working well. I would recommend this citric acid product.
It worked (had to sift the biggest pieces out) but I would not recommend for bath bombs.
Worked but didn't look pretty.
Probably work in a coffee pot too.
I'm very pleased with the results.
