Worked Great - Until it Didn't

Worked Great - Until it Didn't
I bought one of these to offload accumulated programs from the nearly-full DVR to digital files, also to dig out the old VHS tapes and harvest from them whatever is of value, and... I actually got this installed on a Windows 7 system with surprising ease. (For the record I will not use Orwell 10 and allow any random employee at Microsoft Inc in Redmond, WA to do 100% privacy-invasion of my PC right down to keystroke-monitoring of my passwords, CC #s, email correspondence, etc., thanks. But that's a different can o' worms.)There were no hassles or snags in installing the driver - something that really should not be necessary in the first place, but... no snags - and the video capture program included was surprisingly intuitive in its design. Edit functions are limited to cropping from the beginning or end of a given recorded chunk, which was a big help when I forgot to babysit the thing while it "watched" a program and it plowed right into the random junk that started up afterward. And yes, I'm doing strictly analog - a bunch of travel programs, basically, so cinematic picture quality isn't needed - so that means the capture software has to "watch" the program in real time, and you have to be ready to hit the Stop button when the show fades to black at the end.But on those occasions when I missed it, it was as easy as reopening the recording you just did in the Edit tab, setting the cursor near the end of the show, waiting to the point where you want it to end, then hitting the "Cut" button. When you do that it automatically lops off everything from that point and re-saves the truncated file under the same name with an "A" after it. The only problem I had was that it usually wouldn't cut from the precise point you told it to, but rather a few seconds later. So you have to play around with hitting the "Cut" button a little earlier - and the original file is there for another try if you mess it up. It also allows you to do the same at the start, if that's something you need to do.But I had a PC problem that required that I do a System Restore to an earlier drive image, which in turn required that along with a bunch of others I had to reinstall the Hauppauge Capture software (which includes the driver and everything else.) Lo and behold, halfway into the install process there's a new pop-up message that says "Installing Microsoft Edge WebView2. This component is required to allow Twitch login functionality."This MS install junk did not show up on the initial install, and I have no idea what "Twitch" is, much less do I need to log into it. So while this pop-up message sits there, I notice that the progress bar for "Current File" is saying that it is "Skipping File." (See image.) So it sits there and sits there, skipping and skipping, and then I get an error message saying "The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer." And then it completes as though nothing unusual happened. So I do the required reboot, and when I click the Hauppauge Capture icon and the program opens, there's an "Error starting device" message that reads "Your Hauppauge USB-Live2 did not start. Please close... unplug power to the Hauppauge USB-Live2, replug the power [sic], then restart the Hauppauge Capture." (see second pic.)Which does not work of course. So after half a dozen uninstalls and reinstalls of the Capture software and drivers - using the original download from the Hauppauge site that I'd saved to a thumb drive on the first try, so the exact same download as the successful first install - all of it with the same result, I have to assume that the little dongle gizmo has died from the strain of it all, that the $50 I spent on it is toast, and that I'll have to spring for a replacement from a different manufacturer. 'Really, really tired of the "disposable" paradigm just now.Bottom line: I got just over 200GB of stuff digitized - roughly 1/3 of the way through my accumulated stuff to record - before the device just abruptly stopped working. It would be nice if someone could build a product with a longer shelf-life than a standard-issue carton of milk. This was - *was* - a good capture tool, but there is no way I can reward Hauppauge for producing this disposable junk by buying a second one from them. A different manufacturer it'll have to be - which means different software that's hopefully just as simple to use.
