Not to worry, I just did a DIY work-around and did a cut and grind on the sides to make them fit my space. All sides are now 12", minus a little. I had to cut and grind the very corner where the small wire is welded onto the thicker one, so the end could fit into the connectors. Still sturdy and
giving me a good workout with my little dremel. I will be using my glue gun to attach a strip of small air tubing to the edge, both for looks and for safety. ( I wasn't as good at the grinding as I could have been.) One set is for the kitchen, with the bottom slightly tilted up and tied, to use for my pan lids. With top open and one of the cut-off pieces added onto the lower front, I will have no problem with grabbing the lid I need while the rest stay put. 2 In the bathroom for TP and other supplies. Two others in the kitchen for small appliances. The rest are going to be for yarn storage and current projects. For that I bought collapsible boxes to put in them.
I do wish that Unicoo made 12 x 12 as well as the 14" models. Or perhaps they could make 12 x 14 sides that could be purchased separately to use as I am for wall units or as shelves or dividers within the cubes.
All in all I am very happy with the quality and strength of the units and will be getting some more to fill out my wall storages.
If used on the floor as shown in most pictures, they would make awesome room dividers with units facing both side and a couple open on top as well. Wish I had the space to use them like that.
I'm not sure you can see how it's set up from the pictures, so let me walk you through what I did so you can understand the possibilities and the drawbacks. I built a three across, one forward base. My intention was to use two of the spaces to store my vacuum, floor scrubber, mop, broom, etc. What this meant was that I had to build two spaces that were four units high and hope that the rest of the units would support the configuration. My intention was to do five unit towers in the other two spaces, and top the open spaces with a unit apiece. I realized pretty quickly that this wouldn't work.
And in fact, as I built it, I discovered that a number of my ideas wouldn't work, so here's my first tip: Sketch out your configuration, then lay out the pieces and figure out in which direction the connectors have to be attached (these things are remarkably flexible in terms of how you can put panels together, so just work with them a bit.)
Good advice 2: Build from the bottom up. Do one level at a time. I'm serious here, if you do this any other way you're going to be sorry and end up having things pop loose on you because they don't have support. And speaking of support, don't leave a wide space (two or more units) open on the bottom, because the weight of the panels above it will make everything sag. That was a huge mistake I made, and one that made it necessary for me to take a couple of layers apart to add a supporting panel.
Good advice 3: Don't try to muscle these things into place. It probably won't work unless you're a lot stronger than I am, and if it does you'll end up bending the panels and everything will be out of kilter thereafter. Let the connectors and the wooden mallet do their jobs, and make sure each level is solid before you build up from there.
Good advice 4: Respect the wooden mallet, it's your friend, not a murder implement. Use it with finesse and things should pretty much pop into place.
Good advice 5: Contrary to what some reviewers have said, the panels can be taken apart and put back together again. In some cases it's not an easy task, but it's do-able, and better than letting an unstable configuration stand.
Once it was together, after the screaming and colorful language was over, I started putting things away. Each unit is just wide and deep enough to hold my biggest floor cleaners, and with the addition of S-hooks, I could hang a lot of other cleaning tools around them There are also two bars in the package which would allow you to hang clothing if you wanted to. Mine hold dusters and so on.
The size of each unit is not exactly 14"x14"x14" unless you're counting the panels. It's more a 13" cube and the large DII storage cubes fit perfectly in those spaces, which means that Ikea Kallax/Expedit storage bins should also fit. 11" cubes also fit nicely with room to spare on the sides. You can see how the bins look in my photos. The open nature of these panels makes it easy to run electrical cords up through the cubes to allow charging of things like cordless drills, or to add a light. It also makes the entire unit easy to move around.
Problems:
1) There's a learning curve here. It's not a huge one, but if you don't have good spatial awareness, or you're just winging it as you construct your unit, you're going to find yourself frustrated at some point.
2) The instructions aren't much help, but honestly, once you understand the idea behind the panels and connectors, you don't really need a lot of instructions.
3) I didn't think there were enough connectors. I have a bunch of leftover panels and not nearly enough connectors to do much of anything with them.
4) A couple of the panels had broken bars, and they were not badly packaged and damaged in transit. Eh, it happens, but I'm thinking they may not be useable. However sans sufficient connectors, it's moot.
So all things considered, and at the current price point, I would recommend this unit. As put together, it seems solid, and it's giving me some much needed storage for household tools and cleaning supplies.
