Cultural Writing. Biography. African American Studies. SPEAK TO THE MOUNTAIN: THE TOMMIE WAITES STORY is a special book about a unique woman, Tommie Waites, who started from direst poverty in the Ar-La-Tex region of the country and overcame one powerful force after another until she emerged as one of America's leading Christian evangelists. The book, written by Tommie's daughter Bessie, clearly documents in words and photos just what kind of life a poor black family could expect in the Deep South before, during, and after the Depression. Dr. Blake chronicles her mother's determination to overcome mountains of poverty, illness, spousal abuse, racism, and gender bias in the country as a whole and in the ministry. Reading about the struggles of Tommie Waites, one can't help but recognize that the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow has been horror and deprivation but that it has also been a strengthening of spirit and determination for those who fought and survived. Tommie Waites didn't just survive,

Just announced: Speak to the Mountain: The Tommie Waites Story has been named a Winner in the Christianity/Spirituality Division of the National Best Books 2007 Awards! --USA Book News

Throughout Speak to the Mountain, Waites expresses her observations about life in general and her journey in particular with (pardon the pun) amazing grace. She never credits herself for being a survivor, but always gives credit to God for giving her the opportunity to succeed. Admittedly, a great deal of evangelical literature comes across as icky and one-dimensional. Yet Speak to the Mountain comes forth as the testament of a woman who faced many obstacles and used them as stepping stones to achieve a higher calling. It is an extraordinary adventure that deserves to be shared with a wide audience. --Phil Hall - EDGE Boston

Tommie Waites shares over four generations of rich, vivid history that dates back to slavery. She details the lives of poor black families struggling to emerge from the grips of slavery only to be plunged into the Great Depression. Tommie and her seven siblings survived the premature death of their mother when she was just three years old. Despite the hardships faced during those times, they still maintained their sense of pride, hope and love for each other. --Paula Henderson - RAWSISTAZ Review

From the Back Cover

“Tommie’s journey of endurance and ultimate victory over poverty, sickness, racism, sexism and the abusive relationship of an alcoholic husband, coupled with her stamina to sustain a vital ministry into the new millennium, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Her story inspires the hopeless and strengthens the faithful as she reminds us to rise above our circumstances…. I am happy to endorse Speak to the Mountain … Read this book. Your spirit will soar and you too will be encouraged to stand against the odds.” - from the Foreword by Gordon Parks

This was a phenomenal read. I feel that this book should be in classrooms across America. The lesson taught in this book about Faith, Family, Prayers, Tenacity, Healing oh my God I can go on and on. I went to school with Stanford so I would actually say want to know history interact with your family. Again a absolutely phenomenal read and just in time for Black History,

I am the grand daughter of Johnny Houston and Mattie "Suzie"Martin Gray. My mother was Melva Lee Houston Hayes. I'm enjoying the family history, the poetry, the Love of Jesus and the ongoing connection of writers in the family. This book fuels my desire to continue to write myself. One day you all just may be reading some of my materials.

This amazing story focus on the life Tommie Waites is a true testimony on what is possible when one places their life and trust in God. This story has also provided me with a very personal account of what life was like in East Texas during the 30s.

My father grew up in Jefferson, TX and images provided by Dr. Blake has help me to better understand the conditions and environment of his childhood. Also my grandmother's maiden name was "Martin" and it is quite possible she may have been related to Evangelist Waites. A question I feel is worth pursuing...

I am about halfway through chapter 3 and am truly loving this piece of history. I am the grandson of Alice Martin Stiggers. She was the daughter of Clifford Martin and Clara Zachary Martin. The dignity in the history is so amazing to me. It is a piece of me that I have never known before.

The Tommie Waites story is essential reading for the technology generation. I believe that people will be surprised to see what can be accomplished in life with seemingly little or no resources, but an abundance of faith. I found the book to be a compelling journey of faith over materialism.

It is a simple story that is very thought provoking because of the choices Tommie Waites had to make in life and an excellent account of what life was like between those pivotal moments after World War I but before the Civil Rights movement. A time period in my opinion, that is seldom discussed and explored enough in contrast to contemporary times. It is also a story about women and how they can be inspired to strive in the face of adversity.

Excellent book about the life and the era in which she lived. I admired the godly strength she had to overcome all the obstacles in her life. She is a role model for all women. You do not have to let the circumstances of life overpower you. She allowed God to be in control and with her prayer life and faith in God he allowed her to take control of the situations and be victorious. She also exemplifies the fruit of the spirit. She is longsuffering and very very patient. To God be the glory
