Review
Throughout Speak to the Mountain, Waites expresses her observations about life in general and her journey in particular with (pardon the pun) amazing grace. She never credits herself for being a survivor, but always gives credit to God for giving her the opportunity to succeed. Admittedly, a great deal of evangelical literature comes across as icky and one-dimensional. Yet Speak to the Mountain comes forth as the testament of a woman who faced many obstacles and used them as stepping stones to achieve a higher calling. It is an extraordinary adventure that deserves to be shared with a wide audience. --Phil Hall - EDGE Boston
Tommie Waites shares over four generations of rich, vivid history that dates back to slavery. She details the lives of poor black families struggling to emerge from the grips of slavery only to be plunged into the Great Depression. Tommie and her seven siblings survived the premature death of their mother when she was just three years old. Despite the hardships faced during those times, they still maintained their sense of pride, hope and love for each other. --Paula Henderson - RAWSISTAZ Review

My father grew up in Jefferson, TX and images provided by Dr. Blake has help me to better understand the conditions and environment of his childhood. Also my grandmother's maiden name was "Martin" and it is quite possible she may have been related to Evangelist Waites. A question I feel is worth pursuing...
It is a simple story that is very thought provoking because of the choices Tommie Waites had to make in life and an excellent account of what life was like between those pivotal moments after World War I but before the Civil Rights movement. A time period in my opinion, that is seldom discussed and explored enough in contrast to contemporary times. It is also a story about women and how they can be inspired to strive in the face of adversity.
