A field guide to understanding and managing anger--what it is, where it comes from, and how to get it under control.

Many people assume that anger is the emotion that leads to raised voices and violence, and this kind of explosive rage is certainly a reality. But there are many different types of anger, from the simmering to the shutting down. Most of us experience some form of anger or its effects. The good news is that anger can be controlled.

Founded on thirteen faith-based steps designed to recognize and manage anger, The Anger Workbook is an interactive guide to transforming patterns and behaviors with the help of biblical principles and evidence-based treatment.

Best-selling author and practicing counselor Les Carter, Ph.D. and author and Christian psychiatrist Frank Minirth, M.D. draw on their years of experience and expertise to demystify the problem of anger. Throughout this workbook, you will learn:

  • How to identify situational anger in yourself or others as well as patterns of relating, thinking, and behaving that may lead to feelings of anger
  • How emotions like fear, loneliness, and inferiority create anger
  • How to uncover and eliminate myths that perpetuate anger such as, "Letting go of my anger means I am conceding defeat." Or "No one understand my unique problems."
  • For parents: how to manage a child's anger

As we get to know and understand anger--whether it's our own or a loved one's--its management becomes far less daunting. Anger can be controlled.

I didn’t realize that my anger was so prevalent. This book was really helpful in helping me understand how anger manifest in my life and how to manage it appropriately. I believe if anyone struggles with anger that this book will have the information needed to achieve the improvement you are seeking. I highly recommend this book and am positive that if the lessons are applied, I will lead a happier more peaceful life.

I have used the 1992 version for prior classes. Now I am using the 2012 version. I ordered 9 new books for my current class and paid for the books out of my own pocket. I am retired and this is a volunteer project for me. Some of my men complained that there were too many Bible references in the old version and that it was too preachy. The new version has the same principles but it seems to be more secular with fewer Bible references. I do not have violent criminal defendants in my class. I do have men who have suffered hardships as children and addictions as adults and have long histories of problems with females and employers. This book explains the causes of anger and gives suggestions on how to reduce the triggers to avoid getting angry in the first place. This book has practical advice that anyone could use to improve his life. I tell my men I am using this book to teach an Anger Anonymous class. AA has 12 steps and this book has 13. The men learn that they must change their thinking before they can change their behavior. In the end a group of men get together once a week to share stories about their anger and discuss ways they can improve their lives. Every week I can see changes and improvements in my men. This book is very helpful to my men.

The fact that this is a Christian self help book needs more emphasis.

Edit: I was frustrated at first knowing this is a Christian self help book with references to the Bible. But I still read the book and It is very insightful. It prompts you to look inward and is truly helpful.

This is a worthwhile workbook. It clarifies 'anger' in its many forms . . . And I'm sure plenty of us don't even know we're dealing with anger issues. It is a must read. I like that its a hands on book . . . Asking specific questions for the reader to answer within space in the book. Yes, there is Christian basis, Biblical readings as a foundation but not rampant or insidious . . . just clarity how we should be dealing with feelings of being marginalized, not respected, ignored . . . rather how we can overcome these situations when they happen. I'm only about 4 chapters into this workbook. I'm taking it seriously, thinking and acting on the authors' suggestions . . . its actually kind of pertinent to this year's presidential race . . . and how/why people are feeling angry . . . what's really going on.

Like book sample, gives idea of what anger can look & feel like. Not always traditionally angry outbursts.

But several of the exercises are christian based & talking about how your worthy to god so to focus on that & not wrong opinion of others.

So unless your religious, won't get as much out of it.
Example, “What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” (Psalm 8:4). Yet the Lord assured David he had been created with glory and majesty. What does this mean to you?
How am I suppose to write about that? 🤦‍♂️
Not really for me. Much prefer kick ass song called good enough.

I do like the other parts. So will see........

This book is exactly what I needed. I work in a high stress environment and often find that my emotions boil over at home. My wife asked me to work on my anger issues and after much searching, I found this book. Spoiler alert, it is Christian based. This book helped me to understand my anger and work with it. I cannot express how much this book has changed my life, my work, and my relationship with friends and family. If you aren't sure if this book is for you, then read the preview Amazon provides. The first set of 25 questions may cause you to open your eyes a little bit more about anger.

The book has super practical and beneficial advice. The chapter scenarios are realistic, but his example dialogues/characters are cheesily written, which makes it harder to relate. But if you can see past that fault without mocking it, there's a wealth of good advice to learn from.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is a Christian Self Help book...

I wish I was made aware that almost every page of this book expresses Christian content and not being a Christian this is uncomfortable. This really should be marketed as a Christian Self Help book and may be helpful to people with strong Christian beliefs but personally it was too distracting for me to sift through Christian content to mine the nuggets.
