About the Author

Wael Abdelgawad holds three martial arts black belts, and loves science fiction, weight lifting and marble fudge ice cream. In his twenties and thirties he worked as a bike messenger, dispatcher, taxi driver and club bouncer in San Francisco, California. Some of his real life stories are too crazy to tell in anything but fictional form.

Whipping down a San Francisco hill on a bicycle as a courier, cruising around town as a taxi driver, at night working the door at a busy club, all interspersed with even stranger adventures - such as driving deep into southern Mexico to find a kidnapped child, and ending up broke on the streets of Mexico City, only to be found by a kind publisher and feted by Mexico City elites - Wael Abdelgawad knew that one day he must put pen to paper.

Now he has.

Having lived in Los Angeles, Tripoli (Libya), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Arizona, Texas, San Francisco, Oakland, and Panama, Wael has come to rest in Fresno, California. He is a lifelong martial artist with multiple black belts, a webmaster and popular blogger, an associate writer with MuslimMatters.org, and the founder of several popular Islamic websites. He is also the proud father of a daughter who - following in her father's footsteps - loves to write.

This book has everything... adventure, action, a love story, struggles, triumph, depth of character. I could not put it down and months later, I am still thinking about the characters as if I know them. I look forward to reading it again, but first I want to finish reading the authors other books. I am on the third of three and hear he is working on a fourth!

I have enjoyed this story greatly, Masha'Allah (thanks to the book I'm remembering to write Masha'Allah)! The main character, Louis, exhibits growth of character, channeling his greatest flaws into his greatest strengths. One thing I noticed was that his conversion to Islam did not render his other loyalties moot, such as his loyalty to his brothers in the army. This is something I would not have expected or, in fact, was even aware of. Of course it's also nice to have this idealized depiction of Muslims, working together to form a community within the larger context of American life. Finally, I see that the writer is working to dilute common stereotypes, which I find to be a great service, especially if this book is read by young people who have yet to solidify their opinions on Muslims (in that way the book's publication is timely.)

I've noted the writing as "Good" above only because in a great many places, the descriptors and imagery are GREAT, but in other places, the narrative flow doesn't link together quite as flawlessly. On the other hand, I really look up to this author and am excited to have seen this in print and on Kindle at last. I'm looking forward to other works, especially the continuation of this series.

I appreciate and admire what the author was trying to do with this book — it is not easy to write a fiction book about belief and conviction. The book has a few moments that sound preachy, but on the whole, I feel like I got to know the main character on a deep level, and he was believable.

I noticed the allusions the author was making to the Prophet Muhammad (S)’s first experience interacting with the Quran as a parallel to the main character’s first experience. The dream with the luminous figure with many wings is an attempt to allude to Angel Gabriel. When the main character covers himself after reading the Quran for the first time, it alludes to the first verse of Sura Muzzamil.

Wael Abdelgawad is a courageous pioneer in the field of Islamic fiction.

I have been reading this author's serial stories on MuslimMatters for years. He writes so well! His stories are gripping and real page-turners. I've stayed up late many times trying to finish reading all the chapters he posted online. I really like this book "Pieces of a Dream". I think it gives a realistic idea of how one person became Muslim. There are converts related to me so I know they go through the same stages. I love how the author quotes verses from the Quran and authentic narrations from the Prophet. There is plenty of excitement and drama in the book along with funny quotes and scenes. I enjoyed the variety of characters. I love how Louise tries to implement Islam in his life.
I REALLY HOPE the author publishes "Ouroboros" as well. That was my favorite story by far!

This is a novel using a powerful story for the sake of good narrative (and it really is good, in my opinion) and to help explain very much from the inside what Islam is or can be like. Even though it is probably written with Muslim readers in mind, as a non-Muslim, I found Wael's book extremely helpful to understand what conversion and the experience of God can be for a Muslim. So I would highly recommend it not only to those who love a good story, but also to any who would like to know more about Islam through the eyes of a kind hearted and deeply thoughtful Muslim.

This book is one of a kind and I loved it. From beginning to end it locked me in as a reader and I quickly became attached to the main characters, especially Louis/Layth and the mysterious and dangerous, yet comforting, Hassan. I was very impressed by the beautiful balance of drama, action, romance, and spirituality that flowed throughout the book.

While it's a brilliant (and rare) piece of Muslim fiction, I really recommend it to people of all backgrounds. I'm pretty sure, like me, once you get started you'll have a hard time putting it down. Pieces Of A Dream is a honest, yet stylish work of art.

The book had me hooked all the way to the end. At points when I felt that the transformative power of faith in Islam might have been over-stated, I remembered that it was not an over-statement at all. I was able to personally relate to how the truth can be immensely empowering, and God makes things possible that may have felt impossible in a near past.

Overall, a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding - One of the most brilliant books I have ever read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2020
This book mixes talented writing, an engaging plot and powerful life lessons into one text. The author has clearly put extensive research and thought into this book, and the product is a superb story of inter-cultural interactions within the U.S.A. The characters are deeply and realistically developed to the extent you can feel the extraordinary journey of change the main character, a war veteran, undertakes throughout this book.

I would very highly recommend this book to all readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... long ago and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it; it really touched me

I finished Pieces of a dream not long ago and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it; it really touched me.
Wael possesses a real talent of a story teller.
As a Muslim myself, the novel drove home the fact that I often take for granted Islam, the faith I was born and raised with. This novel, just like Sourate El' Khaf, was a nice reminder of what's truly important in Life.
While the subject itself, Deen, could be perceived as heavy, the flow of the narrative is incredible. I felt like listening to Louis' unfolding story in a course of an afternoon while having tea and cake.
Even though this is a "Muslim fiction", regardless of one's religion or affiliation, one can easily get enthralled with the story. I am looking forward to reading more work from this author.
Thank you Wael.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling story of conversion set in San Francisco
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 7, 2017
I originally read this story on the MuslimMatters.org website, along with several other stories involving many of the same characters and set in San Francisco. I was glad to reread this story, which has, I think, been expanded somewhat. The author tells the story of a US veteran and survivor of the occupation of Iraq who comes to embrace Islam. He has to face trials and tests, including with his family (his mother is a born-again Baptist who cannot accept her son's new religion), and the novel shows how the main character finds strength in Islam to deal with these challenges and come out on the other side.

I am looking forward to novelised versions of Wael Abdelgawad's other stories coming out in the near future.

Unputdownable from beginning 'till end! A brilliant book by a fantastic storyteller. I enjoyed it even more than I did reading it the first time on the website many years ago. May Allah reward the author abundantly in this world and the next for providing halal entertainment.
