Mists of The Serengeti Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,763 ratings

From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Leylah Attar, comes a compelling, emotionally resonant novel, set against the lush backdrop of the Serengeti.

An Indie Reader Discovery Award Winner

Once in Africa, I kissed a king…

“And just like that, in an old red barn at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, I discovered the elusive magic I had only ever glimpsed between the pages of great love stories. It fluttered around me like a newborn butterfly and settled in a corner of my heart. I held my breath, afraid to exhale for fear it would slip out, never to be found again.”

When a bomb explodes in a mall in East Africa, its aftershocks send two strangers on a collision course that neither one sees coming.

Jack Warden, a divorced coffee farmer in Tanzania, loses his only daughter. An ocean away, in the English countryside, Rodel Emerson loses her only sibling.

Two ordinary people, bound by a tragic afternoon, set out to achieve the extraordinary, as they make three stops to rescue three children across the vast plains of the Serengeti—children who are worth more dead than alive.

But even if they beat the odds, another challenge looms at the end of the line. Can they survive yet another loss—this time of a love that’s bound to slip through their fingers, like the mists that dissipate in the light of the sun?

“Sometimes you come across a rainbow story—one that spans your heart. You might not be able to grasp it or hold on to it, but you can never be sorry for the color and magic it brought.”

A blend of romance and women’s fiction, Mists of The Serengeti is inspired by true events. Not recommended for sensitive readers due to emotional triggers.

"How many times do we pass people on the street, whose lives are intertwined with ours in ways that remain forever unknown? How many ways are we tied to a stranger by fragile, invisible threads that bind us all together?"

I don't think I have the right words to describe this book. They all seem meager in comparison to this story. From the prologue to the epilogue, Mists of The Serengeti was an exquisite story that quickly and effortlessly drew you into its world. Leylah Attar is an author that has been on my TBR list for a while, but this is the first time that I've read her. I see why many flock to Ms. Attar's stories. Serengeti was unlike anything that I've read before. This story was both beautiful and heartbreaking. It made me think and brought my attention to a part of the world that I knew little about. Ms. Attar wrote a memorizing story full of visceral emotions and descriptive imagery.

"When you lose someone you love, it doesn’t end with that event, or with their funeral, or with their name on the tombstone. You lose them again and again, every day, in small moments that catch you off guard."

Rodel Emerson and Jack Warden are two people, from two completely different worlds. Rodel is an teacher from England and Jack is a coffee farmer from Tanzania. It takes one tragedy, one epic moment, and their paths are forever intertwined. A mall bombing claims the lives of both Ro's sister Mo, and Jack's daughter Lily. It was a devastating event and the heartbreak that followed was an intense, almost unbearable pain. Seeing their raw emotions play out, broke my heart. I felt so much of their loss and I wanted to cry with them.

“In a thousand lives, I would die a thousand deaths to save her. Over and over and over again.”

When Rodel travels to Tanzania, she only expects to collect Mo's belongings and then return home. She never expected to take on the volunteer mission that Mo left behind. Taking on Mo's work leads her to Jack. Jack isn't the man that he once was. Jack is broken and angry and he doesn't know how to get through it. Initially Jack doesn't want to help Rodel, but he eventually he decides to. This mission wasn't something either of them planned but it turned out to be something that they both needed. It helped them gain closure and heal some of the pain that they were both experiencing. With time, they were able to grow closer to one another. It was a connection that both desperately needed. Their romantic connection grew in a believable way. I loved every minute that they were together. Rodel and Jack easily captured my heart.

“What we don’t understand always scares us.”

Leylah Attar brilliantly crafted this story. There is so much that I enjoyed about this story. The writing was evocative and profound. I felt as if I was in the Serengeti and it was such a lovely experience. From beginning to end, I wanted to devour each page, each line, every moment. The epilogue nearly brought me to my knees. It was one of the most brilliant and emotional ends to an absolutely fantastic story, Ms. Attar has attention and I can not wait to read her other works.

“Sometimes we have to let go of the people we love because we love them—because their hopes and dreams lie elsewhere."

Mists of the Serengeti is a thought provoking, life affirming drama bookended by a prologue and an epilogue that will completely steal your breath away. I dare you to read the prologue of this book and not be immediately ensnared. There is no way you can read that prologue and not feel compelled to see where Leylah Attar is taking these characters, where she's taking her readers. This story begins with a tragedy, an atrocity so vile and heartbreaking I couldn't breathe. It ends with an epilogue so intense, so satisfying of every curiosity, yet completely jaw dropping. I didn't know whether to smile or cry, to feel devastated or feel gratified. It's truly magnificent what Leylah Attar does here in these pages. This is a book that will change the way you look at the world, at humanity, at the connections we make everyday that seem so irrelevant but might just be the most important moments of our lives.

Mists of the Serengeti is a story that connects two people through tragedy, connects countries and cultures by chance. An English teacher and an African coffee farmer are united by one single moment, a tragedy that sets a series of events in motion that will change the lives of everyone in its wake. It's a unique reminder that we are all connected. Is it fate that brings Rodel and Jack together? Is it sheer coincidence that two broken people can find each other and heal each other after such devastation? Or is our vast world simply smaller than we think? We are all connected. Attar brilliantly and masterfully illustrates this foreign place with its foreign practices and colors and language and makes it feel so... close, so relatable. We are all connected by pain and love and hope. We all seek joy and friendship and we all suffer the same way when we are robbed of what we cherish most. This story will stay with you. This story will change the way you see the world. This story will broaden your horizons, it'll give you hope and it'll change the way you view your fellow nan. It'll sweep you away. It'll demand you fall in love, in love with love, in love with words, in love with possibilities, in love with these characters, in love with life.

Mists of the Serengeti is a boldly enchanting  story full of heart and adventure. It's as utterly captivating in its romanticism as it is in its calamity. This story broke my heart and filled it up. It's devastating and rich and the writing is as stellar as as the storytelling is masterful. There's so much more to be taken from this novel than romance. Yes, it is absolutely an epic romance that'll warm your heart and give you hope. It'll bring you to tears for these characters who so deserve good things after having endured so much loss. It'll overwhelm you with joy, it'll surprise you with just how steamy it gets, it'll kick you in the gut with the tumultuous emotions Attar creates with her words. But this is also a book that feeds your soul. It makes you feel as if you've traveled to this great land, been exposed to a culture you'd likely never otherwise know. Leylah Attar acts as our travel guide in many ways, using Jack and Rodel as a means to illustrate this place, the smells and tastes and practices of Africa in vivid detail. I love a story that makes me feel like I've grown and learned and this is one of those books.

Leylah Attar is to the book world what gourmet Belgian chocolates are to the grocery store. She's not an author with an endless stock on the shelf you can find while browsing the market, toss in your cart and gorge yourself on the whole ride home. She's the rare treat you get for Christmas, that you nibble and savor and enjoy for the rare find it is because you know you won't taste anything quite as delicious for a good long while. She is the essence of stellar writing and epic storytelling. Her sentences are as lush as her characters are magnetic. In this particular story, Attar doesn't just whisk us off to foreign lands, she steals our hearts and our minds with such an unforgettable story, I've not yet returned from the whirlwind I was taken on and I'm certain I don't want to.

5.0 out of 5 stars unforgettable journey and beautiful story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 26, 2017
Wow…I’m rendered speechless… How am I supposed to sit down and write a review about perfection? What am I supposed to say when I can’t find words strong enough to describe all the emotions this book gave me? I wish I was Leylah Attar, so I could write a review as magical as this book was, but I’m not…

That’s why I would just say that this was one of the most beautiful books I’ve read in the last years. It was like reading a modern version of a fairy tale and it was simply breath-taking. The words were so perfectly written there were sentences and paragraphs in it that I read and re-reread several times just to devour each feeling and experience the beauty behind it over and over. The sceneries and culture described in the story completely took my breath away and I wanted to crawl inside the pages and live there.

The love story was so sweet, pure and heartwarming that I had to stop on so many places to simply savor the magic behind it. Jack was dreamy and even though he had his rough edges, he was so loving and caring I fall in love with him from the start. Rodel was a bit shy and uncertain in the beginning, but she was such a strong, free spirit. I really liked that they were so open with each other from the beginning. They didn’t hide their demons and tragic pasts, because they might have met under the most unbelievable circumstances, but they instantly found comfort in each other. And their love story was magical as well.

There were so many places in this book that I had to stop and just think about what was said. Question my beliefs and perception of life and simple things we take for granted. We never know what we win when we lose and vice versa, because everything is truly connected. Sometimes we just don’t know how.

This was my first read by this author, but it won’t be my last for sure. It had all the feels I want from a book and even more. There was drama, but it was just the right amount and not too excessive. There were some funny parts that made me laugh as well. There was love so pure and sweet my heart felt it was going to explode from those feelings coming out of the pages. There was action and intense moments. And there was this whole magical story that was wrapped up so nicely at the end, I would remember it for a long time to come. Definitely a must read!

It transported me in another world, beyond my comfort zone, beyond my little comfortable life. I've learned something that I wouldn't have imagined although I'm not really surprised.

Everything about this book is perfectly written, right 'till the end.
