At the $35 price point, I certainly wasn't expecting "Dino-Lite" quality or performance, but I must say that I was not disappointed. The Plugable is all plastic, but appears to be reasonably well made. It was easy to setup and get the software installed. The drivers and software are not included, but there is a link to them in the included "quick start" guide. I prefer to download software and drivers to get the most recent versions.
Once the software is installed and the microscope is assembled on the stand, just plug in the USB connection and you're ready to go.
The software is easy to use and appears to provide just about everything you need to make the most of the microscope. You can take photos or videos. There is a button on the camera for photos, but you can also click on the software button to take a picture. Since the microscope is so sensitive and can be easily moved out of position, I found it much more beneficial to take photos by clicking the button in the software.
Fact vs fiction???
The specs state that the microscope will provide 10x to 250x magnification. I didn't see any way to vary the magnification so I contacted customer service. They told me that the magnification depends on the distance the microscope is from the object in conjunction with the focus ring. It's somewhat confusing and takes getting used to, but you will get "interesting" results. In reality, there is no way to even come close to guessing what magnification you're at.
I have included some photos of a quarter at various "magnifications". As I said, it's just a matter of moving the microscope closer to the quarter and focusing accordingly. If you place the microscope right on the object and continuing turning the focus ring towards the "+", you will get two focus points, the later one being the highest magnification possible. Hopefully, the photos will demonstrate what I'm talking about.
Overall, if you just want to have some fun and you're not doing serious research or lab work, this is worth a try. It won't break the bank and it's fun for "kids" of all ages. I'm 63, retired and always looking for new "toys".
I did have to contact customer service regarding a minor issue I was having with the software. Sam, the customer service rep was very patient and knowledgeable and stayed with me until he reached a satisfactory resolution. His customer service made this purchase well worth the very reasonable price!

My only complaint is the gooseneck mount isn't very strong and when you go to adjust the microscope around it will easily pop out of the U shaped mounting bracket. I may rig up an alternate mount for it, but it does get annoying when it keeps popping out or unscrewing the mount slightly causing it to jiggle a little. Overall that is a minor complaint compared to the overall experience though.

Pros:
Adjustable illumination works very well.
Focus control is smooth with just the right amount of drag
Image quality is impressive given the low price of the unit
The little stand works very well, again considering the price
Doesn't require you to download drivers and software, although you can
Amazing magnification that actually works.
Cons:
Non-removable clear plastic shield gets in the way if what you are viewing is not flat
Depth of field very shallow
I used Picasa 3 on Windows 7, and didn't download any drivers or software. You choose the magnification by adjusting the distance between your target and the end of the microscope. Then you adjust focus. To get the maximum magnification, the target's surface must be very close to even with the clear plastic shield. At this point you can focus it in as before. But then if you want the maximum 250x magnification, you just keep turning the focus counterclockwise and eventually it sharpens again but at much higher mag. It is difficult to use because the depth-of-field is very very narrow, meaning that you can't get the whole image into focus if you are looking at something that isn't flat. Also, at this magnification, it is quite difficult to focus because touching it moves the camera around so much. But with a little patience you can get pretty good results.
The plastic shield was a problem for viewing things like circuit boards at 250x mag. I could not get the part I wanted to see close enough because stuff on the board would make contact with the shield. It is not removable, probably because without it, getting the microscope at the correct distance would be difficult and frustrating. However, I think I will use a dremel tool to remove mine.

The leg with suction cup is no joke, its really sturdy and holds cam really still. I am really happy with my purchase and its well worth of £40. Primary use is for computer chips and repairs. Resolution this cam can provide you with focus is absolutely fantastic!
I did not test it on Chrome OS or android yet as I was not in need yet.
Trotzdem: Tolles Mikroskop. Das Ergebnis ist sein Geld wert. Und es hat mir sehr weitergeholfen.
Okay, with that out of the way, here's my review. This little camera is amazing. Easy setup and easy install of the software on Windows. The software is intuitive. Perhaps the best feature is the adjustable picture resolution in the settings. Resolution ranges from 160x120 up to 1600x1200. It's with that maximum resolution that I took the picture of the beetle included with this review. The depth of field is excellent. The software allows for photos, adjustable time-lapse photography, and video recording.
I bought this unit to give me some magnification to help prepare slides for my "big" microscope. But this little scope works so well that I'm using it for all manner of looking at the itty-bitty world around us - things that are too large to put under the big scope but too small to see in any detail with the naked eye. Easy to use and just a lot of fun, too.
As for magnification, that's achieved by bringing the lens and the object being looked at closer together (or further apart). There's a clear plastic ring at the bottom of the camera that allows the camera to stand over the object being viewed. To achieve maximum magnification, take the camera off the adjustable arm and place it right over the object. As you turn the focus, the image becomes sharp, then continue turning the focus ring - the image goes out of focus, but as you turn, it comes back into focus at the maximum magnification.
My one criticism is that there are no instructions in the package to explain how to use/change magnification. However, their customer support is great. I sent a query about this on the company's support page on their website. I received a reply within hours that was very clear and helpful. However, it would have been better to have the magnification information included in the setup/how to use instructions that came with the camera.
I highly recommend this. Great for adults and kids alike. A+
