Whom the Gods Love (Of Gods & Mortals Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 351 ratings

When Cass draws her blade, nothing can stop her. Except maybe a god.

Cass is a seasoned warrior with many battles under her belt. She's tamed griffins, toppled trolls and conquered mountains. She's a warrior. Helping others in need is what warriors do. She's never been afraid of a challenge. Until now.

A quest lands at her feet to help an ailing queen. It's a simple mission, and there's a bonus to it. A handsome northerner has offered to join Cass on her journey. Under any other circumstances, Cass would be delighted with such a task. Adventure? Excitement? Altruism? A fellow warrior with eyes the color of icebergs? A tent big enough for two? Sign her up.

But then there's that god to deal with. The cure for the queen lies in his temple. He's a nasty sort who isn't given to saving queens. Still, the northerner is quite warm, and the nights will be cold. Cass must do the right thing, gods be damned.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Well-paced, nicely written and immensely fun to read, "Whom the Gods Love" from M.M. Perry is a great read for fans of novels such as Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Merlin, Mists of Avalon, etc." - Essie Harmon (Goodreads)

"Wow, I'm actually surprised by how much I loved this book! Fantastic fantasy adventure suitable for adults and mature teens. Although there are the standard themes and tropes present to make it a traditional fantasy, it really struck me as so much more due to the depth of the characters and the fact that even for a fantasy the rules seemed to go out the window a few times and really threw me for a loop." -
Elizabeth Brown (Goodreads)

"The story is entertaining and the book is well written. I recommend it to all fans of the genre." -
Bobby Craton (Amazon reviewer)

"I'm a huge fan of mythology and this book certainly plays to that love. You can immediately tell that this book is well thought out, well laid out, well written and extravagantly loved." -
K (Amazon reviewer)

"In "Whom the Gods Love", M.M. Perry has shown herself to be an author of great talent for weaving complex plots brought passionately to life by the strong, intelligent, and authentic characters, and I like how this book is just as much character-driven as it is plot-driven. It's funny because I rarely read much fantasy books, but Ms. Perry has me hooked and now I want to read the rest of the series!" -
Layla (Goodreads)

"Their dangerous quest to find a cure for the Queen's illness was immediately absorbing, and the story never let me down. The final page left me waiting for the next book in the series." -
Booked4Life

"All too often I read works that feel clearly derivative of other books, and although I appreciate literary influences (as is mildly felt here on occasion as well), when something this original comes along it is a refreshing change of pace! In my opinion it was the characters themselves that made it feel unique, with their personalities and that they really did a great job of carrying the story forward well through dialogue and action, not just dense narrative prose (which drives me crazy). For such a long book I finished it in less than a week, and went through so many highs and lows, it felt like a rollercoaster." -
Megan (Goodreads)

From the Author

Excerpt from the book
"Could it be real?" Callan asked, desperate to stop the soft sobbing coming from the mist.
"No," Cass said tersely. "Stay calm."
Callan swallowed heavily. He couldn't make out anything more than a half dozen feet away in the fog. The ground began to dip a little in a natural depression and the fog thickened. Callan could not even see the other riders now. He whipped his hand back and forth in front of his face fruitlessly trying to clear the air, hoping for a break in the fog. As he spun his gaze back to the right again a scream caught in his throat.
A hideous face hovered in the air, inches from him. The face was a mockery of a woman's. The nose was covered in shimmering scales that might have been attractive had the rest of the face not set the tone. The mouth was curled into a permanent sneer. Sharp teeth ringed the mouth, stained, with scraps of rotting flesh caught between some of them. The eyes were like a bird of prey's, golden and fierce. The skin was mottled and pitted with deep irregular scars. There was some hair framing the face, but it was thin and patchy. Great sections of the scalp were bare of hair, and looked raw and suppurating.

The narrative and writing style is immersive. The author fluidly describes the characters and their thoughts, alternating among the characters in the same scene while remaining in third person narrative. It provides insight into all the members of the unique band of characters so you can learn about them and their thought processes which deepens your connection to them.

The characters are immediately likeable. They are realistic in threat thoughts and mannerisms. The author alternates between serious tones and exposition and humor expertly. The old woman, Inez, was an immediate favorite of mine. Her spunk and wit made her not only likeable but both a character of wisdom, humor, and mystery. While reading I was intrigued by her and the hints that the seer said that she must be part of the quest.

The quest combines unlikely heroes one after the other. I love how different from each other they all are which allows so many perspectives to be explored and developed. With a character cast of so many different personalities, it's easy for trouble to arise with making sure their chemistry and dialogue flows but the author pulled it off naturally and smoothly. Even though all the characters are so different, they still click together and it works for the story.

This is a fantastic read and is entertaining from the very first paragraph. It's difficult to put down because you just want to know what will happen next.

Whom the Gods Love the first book in the series is quite exciting. The cover instantly drew me in. I know you are not supposed to judge a book by it's cover but this cover matches the quality of the book. I like reading fantasy fiction and this book did not disappoint. I enjoyed reading about the bond between Cass and Gunarr. I think Gunarr's name is unique and fitting. The book was hard to put down because you want things to work out for the two of them. I felt like the author had a good balance of dialogue and scenery. I will admit that some parts of the book got me a little teary eyed. I don't want to spoil the story but some of the best books make you feel something. I was pleasantly surprised by the author's deals at the end of the book. I don't like many sales pitches in books but I liked the 30% off deal for the rest of the books in the series. She also offers a free book but I didn't look into that yet. For now, I just want to focus on this series. The only thing I would have preferred is chapter titles. I find it boring to just see Chapter 1 and so on.

Even if you're not into 'fantasy' books, this is a must read. Cass, Gunnar, Callan, Inez and Nat meet through a sad set of circumstances. The king's wife is sick and dying and the only cure for her can be found through a trip through dangerous territory filled with forests of giant spiders, harpy infested plains, ogres, and physical trials at every turn. Callan (the king in disguise) hires Inez and her nephew Nat to help in in his quest to cure the love of his life. Inez, though not the crusty old woman she appears to be, agrees to help and leads him to the warriors Cassandra and Gunnar. As the small group set off on their quest, they encounter all the terrors and trials but also meet other tribes of people who are eager to learn about them. In telling their tales and surviving each day, they also learn more about each other and learn respect for each life. Though the journey is dangerous and trying, love is the driving factor for all involved -the king for his wife, the budding romance between Gunnar and Cass, and the unrequited love Nat feel for their fellow traveler and enchantress Viola. But, the gods have their own agendas and the fates of our travelers can't be changed in the end. So, gut-wrenching choices will have to be made, especially by the warrior Cass. For wonderful dialogue between well-developed characters, thoughtful descriptions and amazing plots twists this book doesn't disappoint. In fact, the reader is left not wanting but needing to read the next in the series.

The writing style (omniscient POV) and narrative are immediately immersive and engaging - it's hard not to like (and dislike but then start to like) the characters from the beginning, which is impressive! The characters were all believable in their motivations, flaws, and their variety which was refreshing, as well as the amount of growth and development of the characters throughout - no static characters here. The vocabulary range used by the author was appreciated, often books use the same bland adjectives and nouns repeatedly, but not this author! I LOVED the way world lore was introduced through characters telling each other stories throughout the work - it made the world engaging without getting a history dump to slog through.
There are some sexual references and scenes which I don't usually prefer, but the author kept them from being pornographic (which isn't usually the case in fantasy works) while still making them hot and steamy. Also, Inez the horny old woman was hilarious throughout.
The book was a little predictable but not every work needs to have convoluted twists and turns that keep you guessing. With the way this book reads I'm pretty sure M. M. Perry plays Dungeons and Dragons and I cannot wait to read more of her works!

The cover caught my eye on this book, and the book is pretty much what you’d expect from the cover: a band of diverse characters led by a strong warrior woman on a mission that requires their combined skills to complete. Along the way, various obstacles arise and must be overcome—the usual journey-style plot. However, even though set in the usual old-style fantasy world, it is a unique take on the classic tale, and it combines well-drawn, complex characters with interesting developments in both their characters and relationships. For some this might be at the cost of pacing, but I find it adds a depth that is sometimes lacking in faster-paced stories.

There’s romance, action, a touch of humour and noble characters with altruistic motivations. This is a combination I always find appealing, and here the elements are skilfully combined into an engaging, well-executed story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure Story
Reviewed in Canada on October 8, 2019
This is such a great adventure story! A pompous King sets out on a journey to save his dying wife whom he loves more than life itself. At the advice of his seer he is told to take a cantankerous but mysterious old woman and an innocent, naive young man. He finds two warriors to guide him on his epic journey through monster infested desserts and forests that must be conquered to reach his destination. Once there he must face a capricious God and pass an unknown test which he may not survive, with no guarantees that he will succeed. It is so good that I am cheating and reading the second book ahead of several other books on my to read list! If you like a good adventure without all the indiscriminate violence and darkness, this book is for you!

Whom the gods love was super engaging and the more you read the more you fell into the world of King callen's quest with izza cas gunurrr and nat and is amazingly written story. For me it took a few chapters to get invested in the story but once your invested you are hooked with many twists and turns that are often unexpected was an amazing read I would recommend this as a series to read especially those who like sci-fi fantasy autours with a new world to explore you won't be displeased now to read the rest of the series to find out what happens to them all.

I enjoyed this book, I have the kindle version. The cover intrigued me, I also haven’t read many - if at all- books with gods in them.

I got Siri to read it to me while I was painting. I found it funny, made me think and picture what was going on. I love to guess what happens to characters.

Great Descriptions of characters, of the lands, great story flow.

I’ve read this book over 6 months ago, I’m still thinking about it.

i picked this up as a freeby and was very pleased with it, a well written, humorous, well crafted characters, and plot. it was clearly the first in a series had an open ending for most of the characters, but the story stands on it's own and you won't be left half way through the story.
