Steel's Gold Kindle Edition
Steel's love life is a mess, and he can’t seem to go more than a couple of days without someone beating the crap out of him. Nothing finding a little gold wouldn’t make better. Or so Steel thinks, until violence rocks the only home he’s ever known, and he finds himself questioning what, and whom, he’s willing to sacrifice to get his hands on treasure.

About the author
Nick Auclair has over twenty years' experience as an U.S. intelligence officer, five of those in the Philippines where he spent his free time chasing after the Tiger of Malay's treasure. He currently lives with his wife on a small farm in Virginia and teaches counterinsurgency at the Virginia Military Institute. The second book in the Steel treasure-hunting series called Steel's Gold was recently published and is now available on Amazon.
Judge #22 at the Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards (2014) said of Steel’s Treasure:
"STEEL'S TREASURE by Nick Auclair is a novel sure to be enjoyed, especially by readers looking for an intriguing, adventurous, down-to-earth novel with an excellent story, and details about what it was really like to serve at a military base in the Philippines in the 1980s. The fact the author bases his story on his own experiences is evident and definitely adds to the enjoyment and authenticity of the book. Readers who don't know a lot about the Philippines will no doubt learn much from this novel. There is a great deal to appeal to women readers, but men should especially enjoy this story because they'll have a deep understanding of and empathy for the hero. All readers will be rooting for this well-rounded protagonist to find the treasure.
As for production values, the vibrant colors and off-putting image of a skull wearing a military helmet were nevertheless fascinating to me as a potential reader. I think the cover will motivate readers to investigate the book. The back cover copy is well done. I like that the blog address is shared so readers wanting to know more about the author can investigate. Nice touch that the author lets us know another book is in the works.
I am convinced his many fans will be looking for his next work. I feel confident that with his writing talent and background, Nick Auclair can anticipate an excellent career as an author."
Steel's Treasure has garnered an honorable mention in the commercial fiction category of the 2014 Eric Hoffer Book Awards and a January 2014 Shelf Unbound award in the "page turner" category.
In the July issue of the Hill Rag, a widely read monthly circulating on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, a reviewer wrote:
"The author deftly ties together numerous plot threads in what is as once a rousing adventure and a thoughtful portrayal of the Philippines and its people...Steel's Treasure rings true in every way."

- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2022I greatly enjoyed this novel. Its a mix of Indiana Jones and 007 set in a 80s action movie. A fun boys-own adventure featuring a lead with his own moral compass. Still you can sense the author has spent time in the region and understands the nuances. If you want a fun, action-packed read, this is it.
This is the follow-up to Steel's Treasure, I recommend both.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017I have been so looking forward to the second Steel book! I read it quickly when I got it this summer, and a few days ago more thoroughly. Same thing as before - I literally couldn't put it down, even though this time I knew what happened. I don't want to say too much about the actual events as I don't want to spoil it - suffice it to say that we follow Steel on his quest for treasure with plenty of unexpected events along the way, meanwhile getting a deeper understanding of the characters. We get to know Steel better, and the reasons behind his treasure-lust, and there is a clever side story involving an over zealous Japanese soldier. The writing drew me in as before as I realized that this is also a love letter from the author to the Philippines and to the Philippine people. Mr. Auclair is brilliant at painting a vivid picture in a few quick paragraphs and the fast pace fits the treasure theme perfectly. The book itself is like following a treasure map and I was truly disappointed when it ended. I can only hope that the third book isn't too far off.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2017If you like treasure hunting stories or the Philippines you will enjoy this and Steel's treasure the first book. Steel's gold picks up a few months after Steel's treasure endds. You can tell the author knows the Philippines during that time peroid. A good book for those that have dreamed of finding the hidden Japanese gold in the Philippines. Would love to see a 3rd book in the series , maybe be pick up some years later .
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2019Cpt Steel is back, looking for WW2 Japanese treasure with his sidekick Jo Jo, Tony, and his cast of miscreants! Love the two books and I am patiently waiting for the third in this series! So hurry up and write the book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2017This was a great book. Unique in that it took place in the Philippines. The characters were interesting and the plot was fast paced and kept me guessing. Highly recommend this book. Nick Auclair spins a great yarn.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2022The second novel featuring US Air Force Captain William Steel as an intelligence officer stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines in 1985 picks up shortly after the events of the first book, "Steel's Treasure". Steel feels rooked out of the treasure he’d found then and now he’s determined to keep the search going for the hidden gold. But his life is complicated by several factors including his work as an active-duty intel officer, his jealous chain-of-command, his social life, as well as his commitments to his expanding local Philippine family who rely on him. But even more importantly, his previous exploits have gained him a fair amount of notoriety. Competition for additional treasure has grown exponentially.
Amid all these things, the Philippines, in late 1985 and early 1986, is undergoing a massive change. An election between the corrupt and powerful Marcos regime and the popular widow of the assassinated Benigno Aquino, Corazon Aquino is coming soon. In many ways, this historical time is a metaphor for the events that take place in Bill Steel’s life. Add in a couple of Japanese soldiers who have yet to learn the war is over, and we’ve got even more unexpected goodness to unwrap.
The cast of characters has grown since the first book, but author Nick Auclair does a wonderful job in keeping it all straight. The treasure hunting scenes are full of all kinds of deadly peril, but Steel has grown in his ability to handle such circumstances and he proves competent indeed. If only his personal life was so straight-forward.
Once again, I was impressed with the reality I saw in this book. The various subcultures relayed here ring just as true as the day-to-day Air Force operations and lingo. This one, like the first book, is a real page-turner. Auclair's writing style is right on target for this kind of novel, historically accurate and informative without bogging down the story with needless detail. The prose is colorful and the settings well-drawn.
I sincerely hope this isn’t the last we hear of Bill Steel and Nick Auclair.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2017We have been eagerly awaiting a second book from this author and Auclair doesn't disappoint! The adventures of USAF Captain William Steel continue at a rollicking pace. Like the first book, Steel's Treasure, you won't want to set it down (husband was anxious to leave a 4th of July barbecue to finish that one). Steel is a complex, sympathetic figure and Auclair is an expert at describing this time in the Philippines as well as developing an entertaining band of characters. Auclair has produced another excellent read - not to offend anybody's literary sensibilities, but somebody should make these into movies.
