Police Officer 'Mel' Petersen is the only one who believes a suspicious death is murder. To My Readers,
I hope you enjoyed Ancient Awakening and the romance between Steve and Mel. Their love story continues in my next Rhodes End novel along with Cole Benedict, a werewolf with a problem and Lily Alban, the woman he wants for his mate. Also returning are Sammy, Larry, a chauvinistic Black John, and the mysterious Broker. As their entwined tales unfold, I'll reveal more about Sammy's past, how the police chief became the man he is, and what the Broker finds when he moves to Rhodes End.
Finding Rhodes End was a long journey for me. It's a mysterious, magic place with many secrets hidden behind the façade of a New England village.
Rhodes End draws the strange and outlandish. Power pulses in the air. An ordinary tourist tooling up the scenic road may tell friends of the charming village, but only the harmless or the expected find it easily.
Underneath Rhodes End is a convergence of ley lines that rival the power of Stonehenge, the Great Pyramid of Egypt and Machu Pichu. The power existed before the Caucasian influx chased away the small tribes who used the site to call their spirits.

Steve's fingers clawed through his rumpled hair as he absently adjusted the focus on his microscope. He needed another trim badly. His rapidly growing hair was more than an irritation. Along with his thickened nails, it was another symptom.
Frustrated when his vision remained blurred he closed his eyes. He had to take a break. He hadn't slept since early yesterday morning. His ability to concentrate on the task at hand was keeping him sane, but his thoughts twisted with the implications of the discovery at the dump.
Swallowing a mouthful of the artificial protein drink he'd concocted when nothing else would settle in his stomach, he stared at the fresh slide sample.
What he'd seen of the bloodless corpse had poised him on the edge of panic. He couldn't hesitate any longer. He pressed the heels of his hands against his eyelids to blot out the memory of Mel concentrating on the puzzle of the dead man, her changeable hazel eyes green with curiosity.
He didn't want to think about Mel. The way she always moved like those too thin, sensuous women on the covers of glamour magazines, with slim hips, long legs and no breasts had his groin tightening. The longing to taste her lips added to his misery. He could smell her scent on the breeze.

I'm Barbara Edwards and a native New Englander. I'm a graduate of the University of Hartford with a Master's degree in Public Administration. I write poetry for myself and novels when I need to tell a longer tale. I'm fascinated by the past so naturally turned to writing historical romance. The dark paranormal stories evolve from nightmares. The romance comes from my belief in people's basic goodness and longing for love.
            I lived in Florida for several years and am past president of the Central Florida Romance Writers and a member of Romance Writers of America.
            When I returned to Connecticut, I founded the Charter Oak Romance Writers, a Chapter of Romance Writers of America, along with several close friends.
            My husband is a retired Police Sergeant. We share an interest Civil War re-enacting and travel the Eastern states to participate in events. I love visiting museums, galleries and battle sites, gathering information for my stories.
            I taught Romance Writing at Manchester Community college for three years.
            I'm fond of gardening and growing antique roses with limited success.
            Most of my exercise is when my Belgian Shepherd, Dixie, demands a walk.

Suspense in a small town

I received this book from the author for an honest review. Ancient Awakening is set in a small town and the author does a marvelous job letting the reader get to know the quirky, interesting secondary characters (that I love!) as the story progresses- promising a return of several in the next Rhodes End novel. Mel and Steve present as a couple you could easily already know, struggling with building a budding relationship despite dealing with the challenges of their jobs...and the fact that Steve might just be a prime suspect, and Mel happens to be a Cop. Throw in a little paranormal element, done with superb description, and the author keeps you guessing 'who done it' until the end.

An ancient evil was defeated... or was it?

Officer Melanie Petersen senses something is awry in the town of Rhodes End. The vandalism at the mausoleum is only the start of the troubles as someone is now viciously murdering people. Meanwhile, her new neighbor, Dr. Steve Zoriak, is showing a lot of interest in the murders. What is behind his secrecy?

Barbara Edwards does a marvelous job with ANCIENT AWAKENING. The tension increases with every page, making this one of those books that it's practically impossible to put down until the last page is read. I have to admit that the side story involving Sampson is almost as exciting as that of the ancient vampire as I fell in love with Sampson! Who would have ever thought a research animal could be so endearing?

The character development is well done but what I enjoyed even more is that Rhodes End is practically a character itself. The little intrigues and complexity of the relationships, along with the mistrust of outsiders and the political wrangling in the town, make Rhodes End a place rife for stories. I'm excited to learn there will be future tales set in this town as it's one I definitely want to visit again! Easily recommended!
