I got bit by a tick and got Lymes disease about two months ago. Before that, I had made it through 25 years old the Maine and New Hampshire outdoors without much of an issue. I bought this MAINLY for ticks, although this review isn't about ticks at all.
I had this in my golf bag to give myself a nice spray down before hitting 18. I'm not the best golfer in the world, so I happen to be searching in the tall grass or woods from time to tike for my ball. This was the main reason I bought this. Was to keep the ticks away....tjebpkanxwau to use the lion on my ankles and lower legs, and the spray on the rest of me....well... I haven't been golfing sense I bought it, so I can't tell you how that worked out.
I have however been at my lake house in Maine all week. Talk about misquitoe city... They are everywhere... The rule *used to be* go in the bug tent, or don't go out at all. Now the rule is, if your going out, spray yourself with Sawyer!
This stuff is the best sh*t I have ever used to keep the bugs off me. DEET works okay, but it smells terrible and I find that bugs still land on you, they just don't bite all the time.
This product by Sawyer is amazing. I'm not going to sit here and say that it kept the misquitoes away, because it didn't... But what it did do was prevent them from even landing on me. I thought this product was garbage for the first 10 minutes, because I was sitting in my chair, still swatting the bugs away from me.... It took a good joke for me to stop thinking about the bugs, and minutes later, I realized I hadn't swap at my legs or arms in a while.
You will only enjoy this product if you truly "trust" it... The chemicals don't smell at all, so the bugs do stay AROUND you.. Yet if you actually watch and pay attention, they never actually LAND on you.
All in all I would rate this a 50/5 stars... In an environment where I would have been torn apart by misquitoe after misquitoe.. In 3 days I haven't been touched by one. It's the most bliss feeling in the world.
THE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING:
the spray works great... Supreme I would even say... But it doesn't like you to be a wimp about using it! Push all the way down and get the full misting spray, or else you will get a lot of liquid shot at you... Trust me, you get less with more on this one.
The spray doesn't smell.. Really... At all... So the bugs do stay AROUND you... They have to be close to pick it up, but when they do get close they go running in a hurry. *note* spray in hands and wipe ears, and use hand sanitizer or wash your hands... This was the biggest help to me in combating them so I did t hear the constant buzzing.
Picaridin repels insects, ticks and chiggers. It is a synthetic compound first made in the 1980s. It was made to resemble the natural compound piperine, which is found in the group of plants that are used to produce black pepper. Picaridin has been widely used as an insect repellent in Europe and Australia, but has only been available in the United States since 2005.
Some people have had skin irritation from using products containing picaridin, although this is very uncommon. If picaridin gets into someone's eyes, it may also cause irritation. When researchers fed large doses of picaridin to rats, the rats lost weight and their kidneys were affected. Picaridin is considered practically nontoxic if inhaled.
While children may be especially sensitive to pesticides compared to adults, there are currently no data to suggest that children have increased sensitivity specifically to picaridin.
